diesel slap on starting
I have recently bought a 98 S40 diesel, think it is the renault engine?
it was previously owned by captain Kirk and has done around 225000miles, just run in then. when first started it sounds like an old bus, it clears within about 2 minutes, but does not sound good. when warm it is fine, drives fine, pulls fine just sounds like sh rubbish when first started. any ideas??? many thanks. Richard.

Hi
yes it is the renault F8Q engine modified for volvo any other symptoms when starting from cold, eg white smoke, misfires, takes a long time to start........... could be a glowplug not working so that cylinder doesn't fire properly until warmed up could be a leaky injector, allowing fuel into the cylinder which is burnt off on starting hence clears during warm up. could be cold start/warm up settings or timing of diesel pump is off due to faulty sensor or incorrect setting. Have a full service and check glowplugs and if still does it get opinion of a diesel specialist. |

At those miles, worn bores and low compression?

Failing that, could be just good old fashioned piston slap, which clears when the pitsons have expanded a bit, and/or, plain simple cold diesel knock
