I'm surprised no one has mentioned prestone yet..
Really good stuff, I have roughly a 70% water 30% prestone and haven't frozen up yet. 5l in Costco is pretty cheap too

I've just swapped from the excellent Sonax Exteme [as it was turning to a near gel like substance when I checked some I'd mixed and not used straight away so I was worried about it doing the same in the car] back to Halfords 5litre [mixed 50/50] but I'm going to use it up and risk the Sonax again - the Halfords stuff is streaky and leaves a film which takes a few seconds to clear every time and I'm easily irritated by poor visibility. Sonax is completely film free on a clean windscreen and with decent wiper blades.

My earlier comment about the isolation of the folding mirrors was met with a response about mechanical sympathy etc.
Knowing that cars are tested in the harshest and extreme conditions by the manufacturers, I made contact with Volvo UK on the subject of isolating them when conditions are freezing. It would have been nice to have known what temperature poses a risk to the folding mechanism if there was such a risk. Volvo says “ it is recommended that the side mirrors are not isolated, regardless of the outside temperature”. I hope this clarifies the matter and people can carry on getting them out of the way of passing pedestrians and vehicles to reduce the risk of damage, safe in the knowledge they are designed to fold away regardless of the conditions should you wish to do so. If you would like to see the e mail, please p.m. me. |

The electric motors will stall out if any attempt is made to exceed the safe current draw on them so no permanent harm can come to them.
They may stop working though until they fully defrost. I do agree though that the noise made by frozen mirrors unfolding is quite unnerving.

It’s not just the noise, it’s the fact that they freeze folded in so you’d end up driving with no view through the mirrors.
If I’ve forgotten to cancel the auto fold before a frost, I re lock the car and unlock it whilst pulling out the mirror. Then repeat for the other side.
