Default P1800 core plug

Hello All
I am a "newbie" so please be gentle.
Last week I purchased my first Volvo - a 1967 P1800s and love it.
I have driven around 300 miles since I bought it, however upon arriving home I saw a mini-Niagra falls coming from underneath the car.
According to my friend, Sweary Terry, the car was overheating - possible thermostat blockage.
Upon inspection, it appears there is a leak from a core plug just above the oil filter. This has to be confirmed due to the almost impossible visibility.
Having looked at the web, manual and this Forum, I wondered if anybody has changed a core plug in-situ without the need for engine removal.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
