XC70 vs V70 Fuel Consumption
Have run a 51 plate V70 D5 163hp for over 6 years now & always been happy with the fuel consumption.
I'm now considering buying a 08 plate XC70 D5 185hp.... can I expect the XC70 to be alot heavier than the V70 on diesel being a four wheel drive ? Thanks |

Not a 4x4 but my S80 D5 auto gets currently 35mpg but slowly creeping up on a mix of roads during my 35 miles per day.

It's rare, unless we do a decent journey, to get more than about 30mpg from ours, but it does do the school run every day, and my wife views the rh pedal as a binary device...

As I'm sure you know, in terms of comparing D5 engines, it's not a like-for-like comparison.
I've often heard people comment that the Euro 3 engines give better fuel economy than the Euro 4 engines, for example Google shows this at the top of a basic search: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=162409 According to Parkers 'facts and figures' web pages, the following combined MPG for manual gearbox phase 3 models 2007 - 2009 is: V70 SE Lux D5 185 = 42mpg V70 SE Lux D5 185 AWD = 38mpg XC70 SE Lux D5 185 AWD = 37mpg If this is accurate, it suggests the addition of AWD lowers the fuel economy by about 10%. And the XC70 lowers it again by just under 3%, which is probably a combination of aerodynamics and a bit of extra weight over the AWD V70.

Weight and ride height are indeed the two biggest factors that affect economy of V70 vs. XC70. When I changed from P2 V70 to P2 XC70 there was about a 10 - 15% difference in consumption although I could still average 55+ MPG according to the DIM under the right conditions. Current P3 XC70 is 3.2 petrol (with LPG) and I'm probably getting 20 MPG but the cost of gas helps to make it less painful.

For the first time, I put on winter tires from Goodyear this year (!) Before, whatever winter tires I've used hasn't influenced fuel consumption, but this time they did. I'm down about 1 l/100 km compared to the summer tires and previous models of winter tires. I've used the same dimensions all the time, 245/55 17" in the summer and 215/65 16" in the winter.
So even on the higher XC70, the tires can still affect fuel consumption quite a lot. Now indicated consumption over quite a distance is 6.9 l/100 km. Before, it was typically around 7.8 l/100 km. You'll have to do the math yourselves to convert to range figures. This is just to say that even for the very same car model, the tires you put on can make quite a difference. |

The p3 D5 model doesnt do as many MPG as the p2 D5 models . They are heavier and all the emmission stuff to deal with. My 2007/8 Se Lux D5 manual averaged 33-34 MPG went down to 31-32 in winter, doing a lot of short runs of 3-4 miles and an occasional motorway run . Best achievable on the trip meter was 44 mpg driving like a saint with a following wind down a hill:-). Still a good car though but moved back to Jaguar for a change .
