Dashboard Warning Message
Upon starting my XC90 today, a dashboard (in orange) flagged up and said
'Engine System Service Required'. Q1 - Is this urgent? Q2 - Considering the car had a full service last July, why would this come up now? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks |

It means there's a fault rather than a reminder for regular service. Is it urgent? Well probably not but the way to find out what the problem is would be to have the diagnostic codes read with VIDA. If it goes away and doesn't come back then it's possibly just a one-off but the stored codes would confirm the issue.

There are many things it could be: I had the same message when the temperature sender sensor failed in the DPF, which is quite common on 2009 and 2010 models. Other possible causes could be high oil level, which should be no more than 3/4 of the way up the dipstick or a leaking turbo pipe; none of these will not cost much to sort out.
It is most likely not serious but it is a sign that something is not quite right so, do a quick check of the oil level and listen carefully for any unusual noises and, if nothing is immediately apparent, it would be best to have the fault codes read.

Check the oil level hasn’t risen/ or over filled at a recent service which was the case with my v70.

Another possibility
Lift the plastic engine cover off , look to the front left corner of the cylinder head and check to the see if the arm for the swirl flaps has become detached.
Very very common problem and will flag that message up.
