Unhappy V40 1.9d diagnostic help wanted Leicester (cutting out idle)

Hi all,

Is anyone in Leicester able to help me out with a diagnostic scan on my 2002 ph2 diesel V40 please? It’s cutting out intermittently when coming to idle. I know there’s some posts touching on this but they don’t seem to have full conclusions?!

It runs perfectly all through the Rev range then randomly coming down to idle it just stops. Starts again perfectly after. The rpms fluctuate very minutely on idle, literally the needle moves up and down less than 1mm. It’s been going on for 2 months now, but will happen once a week at most.

I wanted to run a scan to see if anything comes up before digging deeper but my reader doesn’t work on this for some reason.

The fuel filter was last done 4 months ago so I don’t think it will be that but I’m going to try changing it any way. I would have thought that if there was a filter issue it would affect the entire running not just idle.

Hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

A bit too far from me, but if there is no one anywhere near you and you happen to pass by East London, I can read your codes. Normally this is caused by a leaky injector or more than one leaky injectors. The FPR could also be responsible, but most likely injectors

Just in case anyone reads this in the future I cleaned the egr valve which was caked up and touch wood it has not stalled since. The idling is still fluctuating as before but hey ho I’ll see how it goes.

Did you change the 2 seals when the fuel filter was done ??

If one of them fails it results in air being sucked in and that causes the engine to stall when lifting off the go pedal.
There are no fault codes for a blocked or leaking fuel filter, none for a blocked EGR or intake (The intake fouls up at a similar rate to the EGR).
Apart from EGR and fuel filter servicing, it is worth using a major brand fuel additive every service. I just use a direct feed injection system cleaner (LM diesel purge) to top up the fuel filter housing every 20K km.

PS: Happy Christmas to all you Volvo classic fans!
