Finally got the cams out today and started removing the rockers and lifters. When I lifted one of the rockers out of No.2 exhaust side, only half the lifter came out with it. The top part of the lifter where it clips into the rocker, was very badly deformed. The hole in the top now looked like a volcanic peak and the dome had been smashed flat on one side. I used a pair of circlip pliers to remove the bottom part from the seat. I think I was very lucky the rocker arm didn't come off and twist under the cam. If I can work out how to resize my pics, I'll upload one. One part of the job that did give me a big headache, was a seized injector. Took three days to get out and I've had to replace it. I'm using Haynes as a guide. One thing it doesn't mention in the manual, is that in order to insert the crank timing tool, the starter motor has to first be removed. Other than that, the manual has been invaluable.

Some of the first engines I worked on with hydraulic lifters wer ford CHV and cavaliers. As these were a departure from tappets you adjust with spanners that were always a bit rattly.

The older type engines liked thicker oils.

Some people think that 15 40 or even a bit of 20 40 will be good for their engine.

What happens is the flow through the lifters is too little with heavy oils and they can stick, gum up and then wear. Thin oil works through the lifters with more flow and keeps the one way disk valve inside working correctly

a car I am doing at the moment has the same popping noise in induction system, pulled camshafts out and found cyl 5 missing top part of lifter missing. Engine ran fine but a bit noisey on top so when removing lifters out most came apart in two pieces, also after finding cyl 5 lifter missing top section also noticed vale stem was bent. I will try and put pics on for you all
Regards steve

I would say the wrong oil has been used at some point , I've seen many many high mileage D5's but not seen this problem before , heard of it a few times on here though ! 0w/30 A5/B5 all the time ...

Could you let us know what engine this is?

Here it has been the early DPF-equipped 'Euro 4' 185hp versions of the D5 that have developed this problem at high mileage.
Correct oil spec is vital for these engines, as had been stated, and the manufacturer recommended OCI is way too far.. needs fresh oil and filter much more frequently.
Thanks, Bill
