Default Xc90 mpg

Probably been done to death, but these wonderful tanks are creeping below 3k now, so are looking tempting to me...much more likely to have been looked after than an x5 I would think? Looking for advice in real world mpg. My commute is 90% motorway with cruise on at 55mph or maybe 60 if I'm late....I know, I know, boring auld git. Is 30-35mpg achievable at these kind of speeds. I have not sold my present cars yet but feel the need for another Volvo, was looking at another c70 or s80 but always loved the big xc90. World prefer a manual which I'm sure helps economy? Opinions amd experience welcome, thanks in advoance for any responses. Also, anything to watch out for at cheaper ends of market. No stranger to buying used cars, I know the risks. I remember bob dibble (on this forum) telling me there was a known issue with oil leak from...I can't remember where? I do like x5 also but they will likely have had a much less sympathetic owner he said applying stereotype after stereotype!!

personally I'd go for a manual if you could find one, I imagine any xc90 for 3k will have a dodgy auto box, in my opinion the manual drives a hell of a lot nicer.

easily get 30-35mpg on the motorway even in an auto.

I'm a Volvo fan, and I really dislike BMW's, but I imagine the BMW auto box will be better, otherwise if you can find a manual XC90 that's been looked after happy days!

Left field option is lexus rx300 2003 model onwards, early thirties apparently achievable on a run, get hammered in town though, much more refined than either Volvo or BMW and usually well owned if you see what I mean.

Got 39+ on way home from france in July. full load, 2 people and 1 german shepherd. BUT I was limited to <50mph as I had a "get you home" on probably 46-49 mph (as measured on sat nav)

AWD D5 auto

Also I have removed the 3rd row seats. must be at least 50-60Kgs worth of dead weight. (plus get a much bigger boot). Around town this seems to give me an extra 2 - 2.5 mpg.

I use cruise control everywhere as it is a more gentle form of acceleration. And it stops me going over the speed limit...

George, I was probably telling you about the core plug on the gearbox that gives up the ghost causing a considerable oil leak. This happened to my daughter when her XC90 automatic gearbox drained on to her friend's driveway causing a fair bit of a mess. That car is still running around Dundee when she/hubby sold it to a chap there, the turbo having blown. The car was at 198,000 and she was annoyed she didn't get to the 200,000 miles and get her high mileage badge. If I remember correctly the car got about the 35mpg mark.
I have a manual XC90 lined up for her and a T5 C70 for myself!!. I will tell you more when I get them. Thanks for your comments about my Amazon. At Ladybank show this weekend.

Thanks bob, thanks all. Seem to be relatively frugal big tanks then, but I would want a manual to negate any auto box m'larkeys! I have been searching for a c70 indeed had a lovely low miles t5 lined up but it was sold the other week. Great cars.

Just back from a trip to the south coast, mostly motorway, generally 80, some 90 on way back with bits of av. Speed 50 on M6 and a little bit of town mixed in. Averaged 37, D5 auto.

We've had an 05 auto for almost a year now, going by the on board computer I get 44mpg on regular 60mile a run at a mix of 70mph and 60mph. When I did the same trip and stayed under 60mph it read 42mpg!

On a recent round trip of 350miles motorway driving using the cruise control with 4 kids and a roof box it averaged 40mpg sitting at 70mph. £50 did 300 miles which I worked out roughly as low to mid 30s.

Wow, some great mpg there. Think Lexus may be off list as they struggle to return 30mpg, but they are a Lexus and my previous experience suggests one would be a pleasure to own. I have owned around 200 cars, yes, really, and Lexus ls400 head and shoulders best quality car I ever had!

Got to agree with you on the lexus front. I worked with Toyota when the original LS400 was introduced. It was brought on to beat the premium brands at a decent price, now Lexus is a premium brand. Original car was hard to beat in any aspect, perhaps only it's looks, but fitting with the time.
