id second that with maybe a look at the even older 110 TDI engine'd Seat Leon and Toledo. just make sure you read the codes with a VCDS cable or similar. they have a VNT turbo which can stick and go bad.

we used to run 2 now down to 1, replaced one with a new 1.0 TSI petrol, the diesel spanks the new petrol on economy even on the short work commute. around 45-51 urban commute.

our Toledo has been returning 70+ on steady motorway trips.

Hi thanks for the replies. I paid £75 for the whole sunroof and cassette. Had to remove it myself. Did it in an hour from the donor car.

I'm just going to leave this here:...

850/P1 S/V70 TDi.

I beat my 850TDi mercilessly on a daily basis.

I live about 300 yds from the motorway, so from stone cold it has to boost hard to pull the +/-300kg of tools up the fairly steep sliproad every morning.

It's just clicked around to 320k today and it has NEVER failed to get me where I needed to be, despite my best efforts to kill it.

They have enough guts as standard and return decent MPG.
Martin_r_smith recently remapped mine and it now keeps up with my T5 into illegal speeds, with no real effect on economy.

I've had more Volvos than I care to remember, but the TDi is without a doubt the most bombproof I've ever had.

I have one of those, they rarely go wrong. ESSENTIAL to use correct engine oil meeting PD specs. No history=taking a big punt.

Those are 2.0 litres, also have problems with oil pumps failing wrecking the engine. Probably rare.
Stick to the 1.9 in whichever power output you find in a good car. Mine is the 130hp, smooth and quick when wanted, huge torque for towing etc, 6-speed gearbox, 63mpg on summer motorway cruise, less trundling locally in this weather. 40mpg towing a large-ish trailer, 50+ towing a dinghy.
There are far more 110s and less about. The 150hp in gti-d spec will have been thrashed and is probably not worth seeking out.

Also look at Audi SEAT Skoda, very similar cars with the same parts.

Also look on evilbuy for cheap cars with sensible low miles and history etc, with open mind. Who knows what you might find.

The 5-cylinder volvo diesel has VAG vw/audi on the castings, guess who makes it...

Yup, no need to tell me.

They're a VAG AEL unit as found in Transporter & LT vans of the same period, albeit with a few modifications.
Basically a 5cyl version of the 1.9 TDi.
Not all that rare for them to get to well over 500k with only standard maintenance.
