Default Possibly turbo?

Hi all, newbie here and hoping to have my first ownership of a Volvo apart from a brief fling with a 760 turbo 20 ish years ago! I've come to acquire an 06 v70 2.5d estate. On a test drive not knowing fault with car( revving on the spot it sounded a bit flat and the turbo sounded like it was chirping like dump valve type noise) it went straight into limp mode, check light on and service message on dash info. Smoked quite a bit so instantly assumed turbo blown. Anyone with any help/tips/similar experience would be great. How easy is it to change turbo etc? Many thanks. Really want to fix it as it's a nice motor!

Could it be the intercooler blown. More usual than a turbo and lots of smoke. Is there oil on the cross member below the rad stack or are the lower elements of the i/c bowed down?

I'll certainly check but I'd have expected to hear more boost and why would it smoke?

The intake sensor is seeing a lot of air and the ecu fuels up accordingly but then half the air goes awol at the cooler.

That would be a nice fix! I'm never that lucky though! It didn't smell too handy either

The pressure pipe from the turbo to the intecooler can rupture, this is a known issue.
Remove the cover under the engine and inspect.

Is it the 185hp D5 model with a DPF (grey engine cover)? Could just be a choked up DPF needing a long enough run to do a regen. Your best course of action is to get it read for fault codes before jumping to conclusions about possible faults. Turbos are pretty reliable on these engines.

Yeah will check the inlet pipe and intercooler. Think the engine cover is black but it's in the boot so can't remember! Think it was more serious than needing a regen though! Just sounded real flat revving on the spot and the turbo was chirping which could be what would happen if the inlet was collapsing. Pretty sure it was oilbeimg burned though on short drive. What is needed for Volvo fault code reading? Used to Audi/vw and vagcom

Default Code readers

The full Volvo code reader system is known as Vida DICE and there are lots of people on this forum who use it, so there may be someone in your area who might be able to help? However for boost related issues, a generic OBD2 interface tool and the Torque Pro app will give a good idea of what's going on. Lots of info. on this forum about it, too.
Hope this helps.
