I'm not sure if advertising my services is an okay thing to post on here, please tell me if its not and I will remove the post.

Anyway. I would just like to make it known that I'm in the process of setting up an engine building/ old vehicle restoration business. my speciality being old British makes of all ages. I've worked on everything from 1896 Daimlers to modern rubbish and everything in between. But that's not really why I'm posting this.

I also am a bit obsessed with RWD Volvo's, particularly the 700/900 series, and (as some will know) especially the D24 engine, having owned several. One has the highest recorded "standard" power run, the other is kind of ground breaking in the fact that its the first fully functional and usable mechanically actuated VNT turbo diesel around worldwide (I think!). Its all been developed and built over around 1000 hours in the last two years.

SO...I want to offer my services in carrying out any aspect of looking after these old tanks, even if its just asking a question, I'll be happy to help.
or.... if one of you has a 1928 Lea Francis hyper tucked under a sheet in the garage.. I'll work on that too.

many thanks.

Agreed! And I would never have guessed those Jag wheels would suit the lines so well.

Very interesting to know (used to be in the jag crowd and those wheels are pretty common)

It's surprising what wheels suit cars they weren't meant for :

Those wheels are from a 98-02 S40 believe it or not!

What made you get rid of your Jag then?

Wow, those could easily be oem.

And loved the drive, performance and noise... hated the fuel bills and how difficult everything was to work on. The circuit diagram was over 150 pages!

It was one of the last 'proper' xjrs (steel body x308, never liked the look personally of the aluminium one that followed) but they had problems with chain tensioners. Had one go - thankfully didn't skip a tooth so no damage. But it took me so long to source the bits, get it to a workshop and sort it i had already had to sort another car out.

It is now retired to light duties with my dad who runs a wedding hire business - so still get to drive it, but without the downsides.

i'll get it back one day, probably when he packs in his business.

In a way it was the best car i have ever sat in, from the simple point of view of ergonomics. It is the only car I have ever owned where i sat in it and thought at least one of their interior development team was my height (~6'3"). Everything just fell perfectly to hand.

Thanks, took me a while to find suitable replacements for the previous (OE) wheels that were damaged - you know how from another thread!

Similar reason to why i sold my last Jag, a 3.6 XJ40. My job changed and instead of driving to Cadnam once a week from Sholing, leaving the car there and driving home at the weekend i was doing 70 miles a day to Poole and back. Because of my shift patterns i didn't really get time to do my own work on the Jag so it was entrusted to S&C at Netley and although they were good on price, it was still an extra expense.

At least you still have access to your Jag!

Yeah, i can imagine 70 mi a day starts to take a pretty serious chunk out of your wallet in a xj40 (lovely engine though the jag straight six). Guess they were not only designed for those with deep pockets, but at a time when fuel was a lot cheaper.

And i am indeed lucky in that repsect. I still get to play with it (in return for him picking my brains over fixing it and lending him a helping hand).

He also has a pit with a traverse jack (SO jealous) so when something big goes wrong I can normally find an excuse for a trip there

It did take a fair whack - 14 gallons a week roughly at about £6 a gallon as it was at one point about 18-20 years back. I was earning good money at the time but that was still about 1/4 of my take home pay going straight out.

When you consider the new cost of a Jag, to be able to buy one new you would be earning the sort of money where you wouldn't worry about the cost of keeping petrol in it.
By the time they're affordable for the average man to buy secondhand, fuel in general has gone up a lot as well.

You've got the best of both worlds, you still get to not only drive but tinker with your Jag!

A pit is very handy, i had one at my last place although i think it was for someone vertically challenged - i could stand up in it and lay my arms flat on the ground!
