This seems to be a very common fault of older V40's. I stopped mine moving by gluing two small strips of hard felt either side of the wheel angle adjuster lever under the trim. I can still move the adjuster lever, but it jams the trim in position.
That might not be the best solution, as I am known for botching repairs.

Now just to solve the problem of those creaking noises at slow speed on the passenger side ....

Anybody have anything to offer tip-wise apart from a self-tapper?

What sort of size of self-tapper are we talking about? I'm struggling to find a gap big enough to get a screw started...

I got this as part of an MOT failure the rotten swines. If you look to the middle of the photo below I've circled my fix. There is a boss in the centre of the column controls bracket which serves no purpose but I found it goes through to the steering column outer tube. I checked the depth with a thin allen key as you don't want your screw to foul the actual steering column, just nip it up on the outer tube. Problem solved, middle finger to pedantic MOT testers!

I'm getting the same problem and as I'm replacing my steering column, I've revisited this thread.

As others have pointed out the offending part is this silver collar that I'm holding.

I've had a look at other steering columns from various years at my local breakers and they ALL have this loose collar.

I can't find a small enough taper screw. So I ended up wedging in two small toothpicks on either side in between the collar and the steering column at 4 and 8 o'clock. Doesn't look that professional but the collar isn't moving now and no one would know (except for me)

I fixed a loose heatsink like that once, with a toothpick and a sandwich bag tie.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a good bodge, especially if it's not visible!

I take it to do that you just whip off the steering wheel and jam in the toothpicks?

I'm not sure if you could with only the steering wheel off. You have the contact reel and the switch assembly in front of that collar.

Edit - I had to put in a third toothpick at 12 o'clock as the collar managed to wiggle with only 2 toothpicks. And I used to hammer to drive the toothpicks in real snug
