I checked the depth with a thin allen key as you don't want your screw to foul the actual steering column, just nip it up on the outer tube. Problem solved, middle finger to pedantic MOT testers!

Does anyone happen to know the exact size of self-tapping screw I will need for this job?

I took the top+bottom cowl apart yesterday, access to the hole looks tricky at first, but actually easy enough, if you lower the column fully you can get a screwdriver in without much trouble. Just need to find out what size screw I need now...?

We talked about this not too long ago in this thread. I don't think anyone can tell you the exact size. Just bring your old screw can and proceed with trying and failing.

I used a No6 x half inch stainless steel self tapper. The stainless steel being harder cut its own thread in the steering column and the bracket. N06 is the correct diameter and half inch is long enough for the head to jam on the column preventing too much strain on the bracket. Mine is holding good.

Hi,

I have just bought a 2003 V40, also with exactly the same issue as is being discussed. I am not mechanically minded so have come up with the following fix (or bodge if you like) which is easy and does the job.

1. fold some pieces of cardboard to the required thickness to wedge between the cowl and the dashboard behind the ignition barrel.
2. wrap the cardboard in black electrical tape to create a black pad.
3. drop the steering wheel to the lowest adjustment.
4. stick the black pad to the cowl, behind ignition barrel with double sided tape
5. adjust the steering wheel back up to your preferred height.

Job Done!

I've done something close to this. Cut 2x 4mm pvc pieces but install them next to the adjustment handle. Allows you to move the wheel at will and stop the plastic thingy from moving around.

Yep, that's exactly what I did in effect, as this fault is not an MOT failure. If the steering column itself moves it sure is.

On a related note, last week my ignition module finally conked out on me. For the past two years I had had a few occasions where I could not turn the key past position II but with some jiggling I was able to start the car. Well this time, no amount of jiggling did the trick so I was stuck taking the cowls offs, drilling out the ignition module and replacing it.

What I've now noticed after having replaced the module is that the signal indicator stalk, plastic cowls and related items no longer move around like they used to. Not sure why but man I'm loving this new feeling that nothing is moving around anymore.

I just applied this very same fix. Top job!!

I didn't stick it though, just shoved it firmly.

Can see that the plastic cowl is shoved over as a result so I think I'll do the permanent fix with the screw eventually. But at least it's not going to annoy me for a while!
