Default 1.9TD fault

I came across a stranded car last night. 440 TD, it had cut out and wouldn't start. It sounds like there's no compression (engine spins freely on starter). What's the usual suspect for this, and is it terminal?

No, but a diesel with no compression....
If it is as I guessed - cam belt - then is it terminal (valves bent, etc)?

Snapped belt equals bent valves.
