Default Balljoints !!

MOT today...... went to collect car, and was informed that they had to replace the front offside balljoint as it was worn.
Ok I thought that should be covered under the Volvo MOT insurance I took out, if not then it should not cost a lot.
WRONG.... the balljoint and control arm are all joined as one unit.
£123.00 + labour + vat.
Luckily it was all covered, but that has worn out in under 5 years use and only 73k on the clock, which seems a bit quick.
Watch the nearside one wear out ready for next year !!!
Car is a '97 V70 2.0

Hi,

My car has a noise on the front right side at the mo. It is more rattling than clunk and happens only below 30 mph over speed bumps / bumps etc. Was this the same symptoms you had?

Thanks for your help.

JW

Hi all

On the early cars ( 850 )like mine the ball joint is a seperate unit, whcih is attached to the control arm. My ball joints have lasted until 120k on driverside and 150k on passengers side, and are relative cheap.

With reference to the other poster, this sounds like the classic limk-rods thatt join the suspension to the anti-roll bar. These are cheap and easy to fix.

mark.

I did not experience any adverse driving symptoms, so make of that what you may.

Useful info....

If you need a lower wishbone arm (inc balljoint) for a later 850 - they retail at £118 + VAT, if you buy from Braydon Motor Company (non-franchised volvo specialist) in London - you can get them for £43 + VAT each!!

I had both of mine replaced today. Took two hours at power engineering and cost £90 + VAT inc the re-track.

Regards,

Phil :-)

Discussed control arm / joint failure with dealer today, and was advised that it was probably caused by hitting an unseen pothole at speed or a speed hump. I do vaguely remember finding a pothole one dark night. Watch where you are going !!
