Default ETM dirty or failing??

Sorry if this has been covered:

Just purchased a 2001 V70 2.4T

It hunts at idle between 800 - 1200ish rpm consistently every 3-4 seconds

I have no warning lights etc. (though have only done 100 miles so maybe they have been cleared before purchase...?)

My first thought is to remove and clean the ETM as I have seen on a couple of youtube videos.

My questions:

1. Is a failing/dirty ETM the ONLY/MOST LIKELY explanation for the symptoms?

2. Is cleaning the ETM likely to prolong its life, or do they fail regardless?
