I would look at the wiring harness were it passes through the hinge, it a common place for the wires to break causing problems with anything in the tail gate especially as it not metal so you have both a feed and a ground wire for each item.

You are better of testing the wiring harness by unplugging it from the REM and parts in the tail gate and then putting a small load like a 5W bulb on each wire then move the harness around you might well find that the circuit comes and goes as the wire breaks inside the insulation.

All fixed now, mechanic came today to do work on a car I'm selling so looked at my sons v70.
Still no 3rd brake light but now have working number plate bulbs.

Good you’re sorted, agreed £65 isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of Swedish shed ownership.
