Unhappy A curious whine has occured..

Hello all. I have a v70 tdi phase 2 with a 5 speed manual box. After sorting out the cloncking from the front suspension, I have noticed a whine from the gearbox.
All is quiet in 1st and 2nd whether or not it is 'pressed along'. In 3rd at about 35, a whine gradually appears and is carried through 4th and into 5th. Sounds like an old mini... ( or a bus , as the wife refered to it).
If it is accellerated hard through the gears it is very noticable up to about 70 and then tails off. When changing gear, the noise drops while the clutch is in. If it is coasted, the noise is vaguely present ( between 35 and 70).
If it is allowed to decelerate from 70 , the noise is present.
Loading each side (like testing for a wheel bearing) there is no change in pitch.
If the trottle is feathered between accellerate and decellerate the noise dropps off.
I have changed the 'box oil with fresh, the old being dark gold with a bit of bronze fleck but no more than I would expect (125k) and no ploppy bits..
Has anyone had similar sounds? I am thinking along the lines of diff, layshaft, bearings ?
Seems odd it was quiet untill the front shocks were changed.
Any help gratefully received.

Our V70 is currently in the main dealer for a similar prob / noise. I thought gear box, turns out it's the NS hub bearings..
