Default A couple of questions...

Hello, (hope the prefix is ok?) I am the proud owner of a '05 S60-D5 automatic and I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. When I perform a 'kick down', for example when entering a Motorway from an on ramp, I get a message "Engine service required" and I lose throttle, not all of it but enough to make it scary. The message stays on till I leave the Motorway and do a re-start. If I enter the Motorway and don't use kick down but throttle normally, I have no problem. I suppose some people may say "then throttle normally" but there are times when you need to do a kick down.
The second question if you don't mind is, what oil do I use for the engine of my S60. I have looked at quite a few posts about the type of oil, but (without being too critical) there doesnt appear to be common ground. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Have you checked your intercooler for splits? sounds like the common boost problem every d5 owner has suffered from. I used fully synthetic 5w30 oil stuff.

Hello there, George

I've just bought a D5 a few weeks ago and I'm having the same problems as you...

Before you do anything else, take the car to a garage (or you nearest friendly Volvo forum user with a code reader) and get the codes read. I'm guessing you're going to have the dreaded 6805 code (Faulty boost pressure flow).

It could be one of a few things: Hoses pipes, intercooler (usually dies around the 100k miles mark), Engine pads/engine mounts, Control valve (also known as the Governor), Control valve for the engine mounts, EGR Valve or the turbo itself.

I've had 2 injectors, new pipes, ERG fixed and intercooler replaced over the last fortnight and it's still happening. This week the front engine mount is going to get replaced and then the Governor.

Good luck with yours. I'll let you know how I get on with mine

carl and dacvolvo, I thank you for your responses. carl, many years ago (too many to mention) I could do anything on a car, now I am limited to normal everyday maintenance. I wouldn't even know where to look for the intercooler.
dacvolvo, I have had the car back to the dealer six times and the problem has not been resolved. I couldn't tell you exactly what they have done but I know they have put in a new fuel filter and a few other things, one of them was a new valve somewhere I think. The last time it was in (last week) they asked me to keep the fuel between 3/4 and full because the tank has two pumps. They also said they had spotted soot coming out the back (is this why they changed the fuel filter???) I have made a note of the things you have had done and the intercooler carl has mentioned and I will be going to the dealer this morning to show them. The dealer by the way, is a reputable dealer.
On the oil issue, I take it that it would be wrong to use Helix 10/40?

Hey George

See my post here for some photos and the location of the intercooler - it's just like the radiator and sits right next to it. You'd probably be starring at it and would be forgiven for thinking it was your radiator

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=101425

My S80 was very sooty when I went for the test drive at the garage and had lots of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. One intercooler, 2 injectors, a fuel filter and EGR later - not one puff of smoke and I've covered almost 1,500 miles with no probs.

I believe 0/30 is the best oil for a D5. But according to the Volvo Owners manual for the S80, 10/40, 10/30 and 5/40 are all good depending on the ambient temperature and driving conditions... Not sure what's in mine at the moment to be honest. I just took her to Kwik Fit 2 weeks ago and they did an oil and filter change for me (Fully synthetic oil)

Thank you dacvolvo for all your help, it's very much appreciated. My s60 is going into the dealers on Monday to have the intercooler looked at. They say there is a slight knock from it which they say isn't that much of a concern, however they will look at it. I will keep this forum informed as to it's progress.

dacvolvo, apologies if I didn't make myself clear. The Volvo dealer was referring to the problem with the engine dying and the message 'Engine service required'. I showed him the list you gave in your post of possible causes, one of which was the Intercooler. Sorry for the confusion

Couple of things might be causing your problem.

1. Start from cleaning the air mixer: http://volvoforums.org.uk/showpost.p...6&postcount=56

2. Replace the fuel filter

3. Check turbo hoses and intercooler
Have a look here:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=69443
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=93560

4. Then you have to check if there is no vacuum leak. Check the engine pads, hoses and vacuum pump:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=88190

5. Check the VNT valve (governor) - it might have to be replaced. This is the first thing you replace when suspecting faulty turbo. This valve controls the turbo and it sometimes fails.
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=83830
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=71445

6. Check the injectors. That's very unlikely but they also might cause ECM-6805 problems

7. The last thing is the turbo
Here is my thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=93130

For the oil. Depending on the mileage if your car is over 100k miles use either 5W30 or 5W40. I've attached a file with volvo recommendations
