Default A few niggles with my V70

I've had my 09 plate 2.0L SE V70 for a few weeks now, and am generally very pleased with it. Just a few niggles though....

1. The driver's door handle feels a bit odd, it doesn't open the door as smoothly as the others, and feels a bit.....brittle? Hard to explain, but it is different.

2. There's a very quiet rattle emanating from the front passenger door, towards the central door pillar. If you prod it, it feels like the trim of the door is a bit loose and there's something in there knocking about. It's not bad, but I am so intolerant.

3. There are some cracks appearing on the driver's seat. Are these easy to get repaired? I'm very surprised as it's only done 35000 miles, but perhaps the previous owner was short for his weight?

I'm not sure if anything I've mentioned would be covered by my Arnold Clark warranty...the door handle perhaps...but will check. In the meantime, any advice gratefully received.

I am a relative Volvo newbie but I have heard the following:

Regarding the rattle I believe that there are bobbins on the window mechanism that wear and rattle - you will have to remove the trim and the plastic covering behind it to access the guilty item. My car has a number of annoying rattles - all of them seemingly from the rear doors but you only tend to notice them when the radio is off or or certain road surfaces.

For the seat, have you fed the leather? This won't repair the cracks but it should stop them getting any worse and also keep the rest of the interior in good order. I did my 2005 car (90k) a while back and the leather soaked-up the feed.....so much so that I did it twice.

You've got me worried now about the mileage! I'm that gullible!

They're not leather seats I think - just vinyl. They're as comfy and supporting as anything, but it almost looks like they've been scored with something and you can see the foam through it. Quite odd. I'll probably just see if the local body shop can do anything about it. How I didn't spot it at the time, I'll never know.

I was joking,

I've just taken my door cards off and noticed that the drivers door handle linkage was snapped, opens fine but maybe yours has done the same?

Don't worry - I knew really! However, when I phoned the dealer to check on the timing of the belt change, they said that the mileages didn't match up with a service two years ago recording the mileage as more than I bought it with. That really did get me worried! In the end it turns out they'd put the first two digits of the mileage in the computer the wrong way round.

If I feel brave, I might just take a look - thanks!

There was a thread about cracked vinyl a few weeks ago. May have been in a different forum area.

Ah, found it:

and here...

Sounds like it's worth protesting to a dealer, even if out of warranty.

Such a shame that they ditched the leather from SE spec (2007 iirc).

Good luck.

The trouble is, I didn't buy it form Volvo and I guess they'll say I should have checked....which I should....and I'd probably still have bought the car! I have sent them some photos to which I've had slightly less than one reply so far, but I'll remind them tomorrow.

I think my best bet might be to go to Volvo direct because the car's only 2 months out of warranty and I might suggest they want to keep me happy, although they might not give a toss about 2nd hand buyers?

My wife got herself a Nissan Qashqai the other day, and I'd rather stick with my seat than have that!

I've actually found Volvo to be quite flexible and helpful when it comes to warranty. My current S60 was 2.5 years old & 25k miles when I purchased it, and I quickly found a whole series of niggles that the previous owner had ignored... In the few months following purchase I claimed for driver's window mechanism replaced, two noisy wheel bearings replaced, bad steering angle sensor replaced (intermittent DIM warnings) and a replacement head unit for the sound system ( centre speaker silent).

I was a bit concerned as the service history wasn't from main dealers, and one service had been left several months overdue. But Volvo were fine and all of the above were settled, under the 'new car' warranty, without slightest quibble. Mine was an 'approved used car' from a main dealer, but there was never any suggestion that made any difference.
