Hatch doesn't close - stops halfway

The hatch on my 2008 XC70 opens OK but does not close fully when the button is pushed - stops halfway and I have to pull it to close.

Then after a few hundred yards driving the dash comes up with warning it is open.

It isn't and when I pull to open it is closed and only the switch will make it open.

Suggestions?
