HI
On boats we use " Closed Cell foam tape" a lot
Similar to this

https://www.aquafax.co.uk/products/a...ach-5-77502-1#

Can be bought in lots of places. But if you get it from a chandler you will probably pay a lot more!!!!

It is closed cell so is waterproof, forms am insulating layer, it is soft enough so you can join it by overlapping the tape if it is not wide enough. It also forms an insulative barrier and also takes up imperfections in the metal. Brilliant stuff.

We used to use it to form waterproof seals on covers on the upper decc( or anywhere for that matter)
We also used it between dissimilar metals to form a barrier..
It is self adhesive on one side so it can be put in place, any joins overlapping. The part or cover is then bolted on and it is squashed flat to form a permanent seal, as it is self adhesive on one side only the cover or part can be removed, leaving the seal in place and intact. You can also add extra layers if you want it thicker.

Very similar to the above suggestion as the problem also occurs on the 240 model:~

Clean & repair with your favourite method & products.
Zink coat the metal/prime and top coat.
Etch prime the aluminium & top coat.

Separate the above with a descent gasket (ebay sell it in smaller sheet form)
Coat all parts with a wax treatment- allow to flash off and then fix all parts into place.

The next owner will love you!
Bob.

I'll only have a look when the bumpers start to visibly fall off.🧐

How you going to fix it Luke? Cut that bit out and have a thick aluminium plate welded on? With good old zinc plated hardware. Be reet for another 30 year.

I'd probably put just the outer skin back on, but I'm all about the lightness! Who needs a rear bumper anyway?😂

Yeah I'll cut it all out and my mate said he will tig weld it at work for me as I don't have much free time so saves me doing it. The cracks I'll clean up and open up with a die grinder and fill with weld.

I'll use some zinc plated nuts and bolts, I've got loads of bumper shock absorbers in the loft from estate cars so I'll see if they're the same, if they are I'll get the best pair, clean and treat them too. I'll have to fit them to the car and fit the bumper in to the sliders and get someone to hold the bumper up so I can mark where to drill the holes etc. Do it once and do it right.

The RH front is the the same as the LH rear and the LH front is the same as the RH rear. The fronts do not suffer as bad

I've cut the rot out, tomorrow I'll tidy it up at work with the Dremel and then hopefully it will be welded up within the next couple of weeks.

Ready for welding now, it should be done by the end of next week if all goes to plan.

Everyone at work who saw it couldn't believe how big it was (the saloon reinforcement is nearly twice the height of an estate one) so the usual comments of built like a tank etc were coming out

Another brick bites the dust.🥺

See 7:37. Aluminium bumper snapped in half like a twig? I guess they don't really provide any sort of protection at this age.🤔
