Default Drive train

My Xc70 D5 6 speed manual has now done 166K

With the weather turning colder , I have notice that first thing in the morning after the car has been parked over night when you let the clutch out in first gear your can fell take up of all the slack in the drive train , there is a definite knock/clunk. this happens to a lesser extent when changing gear.

Now if the car is driven for about 2 miles so its just starting to put some heat in to the engine/clutch/gearbox the harsh take up of the drive train is no longer present, and will not be present for the rest of the day event when parked up for several hours.

I have checked all the drive shafts and there is no excessive play in any of them, I have also checked the shaft from the front to rear with all 4 wheels on the ground there is just a few degrees of turning movement.

So has anyone any suggestions what might be causing this or suffered the same problem ?

Get similar on my V70, just when taking up drive and coming to a stop. It's a definite but quiet knock, and as you say doesn't seem to do it when everything's warmed up (or I don't notice it).
I was putting it down to tired engine mounts, intend going through them if it ever stops raining for long enough... I've previously had a worn out driveshaft, it sounds nothing like that.

It may have been there a while, I've only just noticed as I've finally stopped the suspension knocks!

Mines a 2WD V70 D5 Manual (5 speed E3) at 209,000 miles.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think it's engine mounts in my case.

If I put the car in gear and Jack up one corner so I can spin the wheel , I can make the same clunk\knock by turning the wheel round sharply so it locks up against the locked drive train.

Doing this by hand I doubt I would be able to move the engine on its mounts.

I might try and record the sound tomorrow if it's not chucking it down.
