Low Oil indication

Car only got serviced last week and today I got this indication. Maybe done 100 miles max since service last week. Took car out again and light didnt come back on. Didnt see any oil leaks, but I guess I wouldnt as the XC70 has an engine plate underneath. Eitherway, I am going to call the garage who did the service as I shouldnt be getting any low oil messages.

Anyone else had this? Is it a known glitch?

On my dashboard system, there is an oil level option. This is greyed out and I remember the dealer telling me the XC70 MY16 didnt have a traditional dip stick anymore and the dash oil level was meant to be the way to check levels.

I have exactly the same on a xc 70 2010
I have been told it should read 75% on the level gauge
I am not sure about this as I do not have a manual to look at
It would be very interesting to find the level

There's no dipstick in these particular vehicles, but you can check the level inside the car. You can't select to check the oil level/the option is greyed out in the menu & isn't selectable possibly because you may be trying to perform the task at the wrong time. The car can't be running, it has to be off as an example. This video explains the process clearly - Have a look & give it a try on your car:

You're likely getting the error because they didn't reset the oil level indicator using VIDA. This basically tells the car how much oil is in the sump, so if the indicator hasn't been reset when the service was done, you'll get error messages. Check the oil level using to above video to help & see what the readout is (I think it should be 70% if I remember correctly). Nevertheless, you shouldn't be getting this error message & like you say, bring the car straight back to the garage for them to sort it out.

On this note though, can anyone tell me how does one manage doing DIY servicing? How can you check that the vehicle has exactly 70% of oil if you haven't got the software to check it? Does this mean that these vehicles have to be taken to the dealership for an oil change & they'll charge you a ridiculous price like most dealerships do for doing so?

Thanks for the link. Yes, even at standstill oil level was greyed out. Perhaps due to engine being hot at the time. This morning cold and was able to check the oil level and the indication is at 'Min'. Checked engine bay to see if oil was pooling on the protective engine plate but couldnt see anything. I reckon it could be a case they've not put enough or the bare minimum of oil in. The garage is 7 miles from the house. I did manage a 30 min drive yesterday where it was on this drive original warning light came on.

When you say " got it serviced" I Assume by a non volvo garage ?

It is critical that the correct volume of oil is added which is exactly 5 litres ... Then the oil level gauge must be calibrated by the dealer so that the volume of oil you have put in is taken as 100% ..

Also the question begs . What oil did they use? Volvo have their own unique specification oil . It must be RBS0-2AE 0w-20 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil for Volvo Drive E Engines.

I Could be wrong, but:

I'm under the impression that they have a service dipstick,

My 2012 have one, its tiny and burred right down the front of the engine,
Its a small Grey loop, and is VERY hard to pull out (take care) the total dipstick is no longer then 4 inches, you may need a torch to see it

It enters the block where the normal dipstick would but doesn't have a tube to make it easy to get hold of, i get a black arm every time i check it.

The on screen display i believe uses an ultrasonic sensor and can take up to 20 miles to show the correct level.

If your worried and need to use the car have a look for the service dipstick.
It must be there else even the garage couldn't rely on a sensor that takes 20 miles to update,

Have a search for "service" or "technicians" dipstick, there's a few threads on this to help.

Ps couldnt get the thing to pull out.... I did find it, cleverly blended in with the rest of the engine colour.

Been sat at garage for over an hour..... I am guessing they are letting the oil cool down or so....

Working from home today anyway so sat in garage reception on laptop and listening in to a conference call....

If this is a 4-cylinder 2L VEA D4 then you've got the wrong oil in it. But I'm assuming you have an AWD XC60 and hence the older 5-cylinder engine? It's this diverse choice of engines that's probably led to too little oil being put in.

If the e-dipstick and warning message system is the same as mine, then the car has to be driven for at least 30km before the system updates, as the e-dipstick gives the average reading over that distance. The reason that the system should ideally be reset after an oil change is so that the e-dipstick immediately gives a 'max' indication, rather than show whatever reading was on it before the change. If you don't reset the system then it takes 30km of driving to show the new figure from the oil change. It isn't actually a calibration, so garages without VIDA (or DIY owners) can still change the oil, but must then wait for the system to update... hence why it's vital to know the correct loading figure and be sure to accurately follow it.
