Default Won't run

Ok Guys and Girls I have an T5R that broke down last night for the 1st time in 6Years.

The car turns over and starts but will only run for maybe 5-10 seconds then dies.

I have fuel and at 1st start runs fine then dies.

The only thing i have found so far is a noisey idle control valve. Vibrating loudly. Could this be the cause?

Look forward to some useful answers

Iain

Last time i had probs with the valve the symptoms were low tickover / lumpy idle,it ran ok at revs-it never actually stopped the engine

i cleaned it out with carb cleaner and it was fine after that

i would take it off and give it a clean for what it will cost its worth doing anyway

Only other thing i can think is if the valve is noisy because its trying to over compensate to keep the engine running because of another fault somewhere

Is the lambda light on?

Hi Iain,
It is normal for the IACV to buzz however it will do no harm to clean it out with carb cleaner tho you will need new jubilee clips..You may want to do the throttle body too...

There are two other areas that
come to mind the first, the immobiliser which depending on the type you have will allow the car to start then cut the engine..Someone else will have to confirm the time duration..

Secondly is the fuel pump relay,. Can you hear this click on and off when you turn the key to pos 2....

As above ...any codes?

Cheers
Jod

I can hear the fuel pump start to run as per normal. Car stinks of fuel. How can I check if it's the immobiliser. Aslo cleaned both the ICV and throttle body, also made sure all pipes etc are connected. I have no way of reading the fault codes

You will need to make a codereader instructions are in the technical articles section... Do you know if your key is chipped, the antenna ring round the ignition barrel may need a clean, search the site for posts by chris_rogers... Cheers jod

Shame no code...You got 1-1-1?
The antenna ring can be seen if you remove the lower steering column shroud...
If you have one clean the electrical contacts....
I would expect the car to run with a air leak however it may be prudent to check the big air inlet pipe onto the turbo and the inlet manifold elbow...
When was the cap, rotor and leads done?...
Cheers

yeah no codes is a pain and it was 1-1-1......

have check for air leaks and all pipes/hoses are ok. Checked rotor arm etc this morning and all ok again.

Could it be the fuel pump relay switch in the fuse box?

Looks like i don't have an antenna ring, even though i have a fuse for it fitted...there is a connection in the area but nothing connected to it.

I did mention the fuel pump relay earlier, you should hear is click on and off when pos2 is selected...The pump may still prime but the relay will also make a noise...I did sort of discount it as you said you could smell fuel....I have one at home somewhere if you want a lend... Cheers Jod

just seems like it will run for a few seconds die and then if you try and restart it straight away it just turns over. If you leave it a minute or so it will start and die again.
