Here's my 10p. I ran my C70 around bruntingthorpe with 302mm plain Zimmerman disks and DS2500 pads. They were seriously smoking by the time I came back to the pits but still didnt show any fade at all.

A tuned T5 doesnt require any better brakes than a non tuned - they still weigh the same and the forces required to stop are the same.

I have also used DS2000 pads aka Performance with 280 mm on my 855R and they were pretty damn good too.

Ferodos are not snatchy either.

The theory behind tuned cars need better brakes is that they will be travelling faster at any given point due to their increased performance.

(This is my first post, although I've been lurking for months, and would like to take the opportunity to retrospectively thank everyone for they advice I've picked up here which lead to me buying an S60 D5 and not regretting it for a minute) :)

Hi, welcome :-) Another point is that there a number of people on our forums that have seen fit to upgrade their brakes to APs. In the end these people must have made that decision because they were unhappy with their previous set-up and wanted the added security of the stopping power of AP brakes and were prepared to make the investment. It's a matter of free choice!

Yes

Yes

Yes, but with new, longer hoses (I believe)

> and pads?

Not old pads surely? Presumably you mean regular size pads, i.e for an 850 or S/V/C70, but in your preferred choice of compound based on the views posted above, e.g. Ferodo Performance, or DS2500 or whatever.

Be sure to let us know how the conversion works out.

Yes indeed that is correct - the calipers remain the same - just that the carriers are bigger. You need to have the right alloys. Standard 850 T5 16" alloys "Columba" ...http://www.wheelcollision.com/wccpix/70185.jpg

will not allow you to increase the carrier size.

However the 16" Perfos will ... http://www.wheelcollision.com/wccpix/70222.jpg

Any 17" obviously will not present the same problem.

Replace at 27mm! Crikey what a load of ####!

Mine are 26.6mm after 28k miles. They're still flaming awesome- I certainly won't be replacing them for a good few years.

I only replaced the original AP discs after they started cracking around the drill holes. They still worked fine but were seriously worn! Only threw them out a few months ago shame I didn't measure them before I binned them. The cracks were the main reason why I went to grooved discs this time round.

Andy's right! Minimum thickness is 23mm for front disks (it says so on the hub of the disk) - at least it was when I first replaced my 280mm on the 850 and I cannot imagine why it would be any different for the 302s

A bit of confusion here guys. The standard Volvo discs, i.e. 280 and 302, are 26mm thick and have a 3mm wear allowance. The 320 Volvo disc is 28mm thick and has a wear alowance of 2mm. And from what AP owners have said, the 325mm AP disc is also 28mm thick but has a wear allowance of 1mm!
