Default s40 1.6 diesel cutting out

hello guys. I have bought a s40 1.6 diesel. the car has a problem were it cuts out when driving and u get upto 3rd gear .there's no engine management light on but there's a service light showing due a service and a triangle showing on display. the oil is dirty and have no idea when it was last serviced. I have been advised by a mechanic that it could be a fuel filter.

has anyone came across this problem and may be able to give me some advice on what it could be thank you

Always start with the easy , simple & most cost effective solutions , So yes , swap the fuel filter . BUT does the engine feel reluctant to rev ? filter problems usually reveal themselves as not wanting to rev above say half revs .

You can often get a diesel to rev harder when stationary , but becoming gutless when driven as fuel flow is dramatically reduced & unable to meet engine demands.

Also ensure that you do not have an excess of air bubbles in the fuel flow as this can limit how the engine runs .

Avoid listening to tales of woe & great cost for repairs , from my experience KISS Keep It Simple , Stupid ( that's me ! )
