Shocking Shock Absorbers
Hi,
I have a 2008 XC90 D5 185ps manual diesel...and I've been quoted in excess of £1,000 for two new rear shock absorbers - and that's JUST for the parts. Is there something special about them? Where can I get cheaper? Any ideas? Thanks in advance, M |

These are Nivomat and are VERY expensive new.
What makes you think that BOTH are worn out ? What mileage is on the car? If only one is U/S it is perfectly acceptable to put a good used one on at around £80-£100.

Mate at work got one off eBay from a dealership for 200 something and by messaging them and not going through eBay by doing it over the phone they knocked another £30 off.

Hi,
Thanks for prompt replies. She's done 166k, and is otherwise going well. My local garage says she needs both doing, and I trust them completely. Any idea of the part number I need to search for, or where I can locate the part number? Thanks, M PS It also needs a power steering hose at 275 - is that right? |

I'm all for doing things as cheap as possible but I would never ever change things like shock absorbers[dampers]in ones.Always, always replace such things in pairs.

Get a second opinion from another Volvo independent in respect of all work that you have been told is needed. I'm sceptical.

Hi,
Steering fluid is leaking, and there's a horrible knocking from the back as I go over bumps, and the car sort of judders at the rear, as it goes round corners. It does make sense to me. Volvo prices, don't though! M |

If you are happy to let them do it without a second opinion great.

Dippy, You're wrong on this point. Nivomats are completely within tolerance set by the factory, even when 2nd hand long as they're not leaking. They are not a £100 part new. They are £500 each.... and they are very very well made. I have replaced them in singles.... rears on my car, and they are perfect 2nd hand, and perfectly safe to do so. Your opinion is welcomed, but in this case, its wrong. |

If there is no fluid, then CAREFULLY replace the rubber boot, so no dust and muck gets back inside. That is its only protection. If you don't put the rubber back on, it will be damaged quickly, leading to an early replacement. |
