Can the HDD actually be forced to update from the DVD?

Or does the HDD need to be formatted first from some master system?

We do not know what file system it uses, we do not know if it needs formatting first. Is it RAW, FAT, NTFS, EXFAT, EXT??
I am guessing FAT32, but that is a guess.
Highly unlikely to be NTFS as that is a Microsoft Windows format and unlikely that they licenced it to the nav manufacturers.

One thing to try is in menu 3.7 HDD Information > (d) HDD Update > Exceute

No promises, no idea what will happen.

You will of course need the DVD disks to insert into the DVD drive.

As Swiss stated, try option (d) or option (c) in 3.7 HDD Information.

If this does not work, I can talk you through how to go about making a byte-by-byte copy of a working nav HDD and write that byte-by-byte copy to the new HDD.
Too bad the shipping would be too expensive for you to ship me your broken HDD (to Canada).

I've been doing a lot of digging how these systems work, what other nav systems share the same system design (ex: same maps and portions of the firmware). I'll put the data on GitHub at some point.

As a FYI, if someone ever needs to know the drive's password to read it when connected to a PC, it's one of these:

I've also deduced an update method that works on other SH-4 based design NAV systems if Volvo ever stops making maps. You leverage 3rd gen Toyota Prius maps (that are updated yearly) and write them directly onto the hard drive.

Did you ever get this working? Would be great to know for future hard drive failures!

GenericVolvoDriver - can you advise on how you actually read the data on drives with those passwords - also do you know what disk partition format is used? Reason I ask is that I have moved to a region outside my current navigation area and volvo pacific discs update the firmware but not the maps so have been reading this thread in the hope I can copy a drive from a local car but you mentioned that you can copy the maps direct has me intrigued

Just I insert a map disc for your area and the new map will load. If not use the diagnostic menu to force the map update.

Thanks SwissXC90 - I did insert the new map and it did a firmware update but didn't invoke the map update - I raised the issue with the dealer and they asked Volvo who the gave the following reply:-

"Volvo has advised in their Technical Report that it is not possible to change the region for this version of Navigation, or run maps outside of the region the car is set for."

sounds like a fob off to me considering the device itself says contact dealer for additional maps - what option do I select in the diagnostic menu?

I have got options like reset key etc and when I highlight them and press enter nothing happens - is there a specific way of selecting the options other than the obvious enter key?

Interesting... Let me look through my notes on what would be helpful. No promises. I've been reading through a lot of Denso/Mitsubishi Electric based nav discussions.
This seems to be a common practice in "Eastern Europe".

There are some detailed guides of people explaining how to replace the files to update their maps when their manufacturer stopped making new map DVDs. They just took the maps of a similar map format (I read one case where they took maps from Volvo DVDs) and replaced the map files on their nav HDD.

Let me get back to you... To start searching on your own google those ATA passwords, LOADING.KWI and other filenames on the nav DVD.

The commonality between the cars is that they're using the KIWI file format. I even found some 2001 era Japanese KIWI map debugging and editing software. Sadly the links are all dead. As I've been going along doing this research I've been arching all the pages / tools I go to as they seem to be dying off.

Hi Folks, here is an update.

I have tried to use the 'Map Update' and 'HDD Update' options in the SatNav diagnostic menu (see attached photo) but their of them actually work. You can move the cursor to highlight them but when you press 'Enter' nothing happens.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get these functions working?

Honestly I was never brave enough to execute the commands on a working system.
Try with and with out map disc inserted.
