Unhappy Cigarette lighter socket broken

I’ve just discovered that the cigarette lighter socket in my V70 has been pushed into the centre console of the car and I can’t therefore plug anything into it.

Is there a simple method of pulling it back into position or do I have to remove the centre console to reseat it?!

If I have to remove the console is there a thread that will help with a 98 V70 auto?

Hi, I have never had this happen but have you tried pulling it out using a pair of tweezers. I would reco disconnecting the battery first.

It can be negotiated out using a finger or hooks, but won't reseat.

I assume there is something snapped behind, but was hoping there might be a simple method of pulling it back so that it clips back in.

If it passes out through the console, then either the outer plastic edge of the lighter socket has been broken or become detached reducing the diameter of that part that would normally seat on the console alternatively the socket has been pushed so hard it has broken the plastic away from the console in which case you'll need to sleeve it - the socket should look something like this

but might also be this variant in a crossover model

It wont come out of the console, just pulls into the correct position, but doesn't stay put once there. I assume some tangs have broken off behind.

How do I get the centre console out; is it simple?

If you get a replacement socket you probably wouldn't have to remove the console just patch the wires in using either terminal blocks, clamp or twist connectors - there's enough slack on the wires to make the connections - the replacement literally just seats in the existing hole and the locating tangs spring back out once they pass through the hole in the console.

The tabs have almost definitely snapped off. This is actually a common problem, as the tabs on the back are very thin. A good push with a satnav socket and its curtains. I don't think it would be easy to repair that will last!

There are replacement sockets that look quite good actually, but you may need to remove the console to get at the wiring. The original had a small light on the side which may have to be redundant on the replacement, as i found that it would foul underneath!

As stated, Robert DIY will show you how to remove the console, it's not too difficult!

When I removed my console, I used the Haynes manual as a guide, so if you have a copy that may help. It's not actually too hard, but it helps enormously to have a little guidance as to which direction to pull, push or slide things, otherwise they're likely to break. I did mine without breaking anything, but probably would have broken something without some guidance.

There are 2 tabs, one each side as you look down. You might be able to fix it with a tie wrap, especially if only one tab has come off. Some epoxy might also come to your rescue.
