Default Which Engine Oil? 53 Plate

I know this has been covered a few times on the forum but after looking through the old threads i still can't be sure so here goes.

Which oil do i need for my 53 plate XC90?

When i put my registration number in i get 2 choices, 2002 - 2004 and 2004 onwards.

My cars shows as a 2004 model, but it was registered in September 2003.

It seems my choices are 0W30, 5W30 or 5W40 but i would like to be able to use the same oil to top up my passat too.

National tyres, who do an oil and filter change service, show Castrol Edge 5W40 Turbo Diesel or Castrol Edge 0W30 Full Synthetic for the volvo and Castrol Edge 5W30 Fully Synthetic or Castrol Edge 5W40 Turbo Diesel for the passat so the common oil is Castrol Edge 5W40 Turbo Diesel.

Eurocarparts are doing 25% off this weekend so i can get this delivered for £31.49 but if i type my reg in on their site it says i need castrol Edge 0W30 for the volvo and Castrol Edge 5W30 for the Passat, no mention of the Turbo Diesel version!!!

I should add that at present this is for topping up but i do plan on carrying out the next service myself and so will need the right oil then, and 2x4l possibly, although i don't think i can buy the oil for the price National can do the oil and filter change for!!

Any help would be appreciated.

you need 6.5 litres of 0w/30 A3/B3 specification as you are on 12000 service intervals , the later D5 is 18000 mile intervals which is A5/B5 spec 0w/30
You can use the A5/B5 spec in yours but it will be a little more expensive ..

Thanks Clan, so i think its two separate grades of oil, one for each car.

Definately seems cheaper to get the oil and filter changed rather than buy the oil myself, don't know what experiences anyone has had with the chains?

When it was last serviced they used Titan GT1 5W-40 SL, is it ok to mix 0W-30 iwth this oil to top up?

Normally fine to mixe oils. Never had a problem. Cant believe a garage is cheaper than buying the bits yourself. Think you have to be careful that they actually use the oil thats needed. The oil and filter you need costs at least 40 pounds just to buy.

I agree. You can get too hung up about which oil too use.I use semi synthetic usually and do my own oil and filter changes.Asda were selling GTX at £10 for four litres in different grades not long ago and it may still be that price i dont know.I've never paid over the odds for motor oil and never been afraid too mix oil and i've never had a problem.

Thanks all, here are the numbers to compare with a oil and filter change at a national retailer

5 litres of Catrol Edge around £42.00 + 2x 1 litres at £16.00 each (6.5 litres in total required) + filter a around £8.00 = £82.00 but there is usually 25% discount applied which brings it to around £62.00

It is £60.30 to have it done at one of the nationals with Castrol.

True, i would want to ensure that they used the parts that they say they will but at those prices its got to be worthy of consideration for the oil and filter change.

So buy two 4 litre containers for not much more, then you have the 2litres you need next year!
I pay about £35 for 5litres of fully synthetic oil (Carlube brand). The Castrol or Mobil with 25% off sounds a good deal.
Filters are £5 to £9.

using 0w/30 fully synthetic oil should improve fuel economy compared to other oils(5w/40 etc)

More oil related questions....

Costco are currently doing some very good deals on Castrol oils, so instructed my wife to get 0w-30 if possible or 5w-30 if the 0w-30 was not available. She returned with 5w-40, which was the only Castrol Edge available. My research suggests that this is probably not suitable for my 55 reg XC90 163, but would welcome others opinion.

Just for info, it was priced at around £25 for 4l, which I reckon is an exceptional deal, although not much good if the oil is no use.....

Further research suggests that it is an acceptable alternative in the temperature range -25 to +40. Can anybody give a reason why I shouldn't use it?
