Got back from working in Englandshire on Friday so spent a couple of hours on Friday and all day Saturday prepping the front end parts. It doesn't look much in the pics but it was hard going, my hand and forearm were cramping yesterday from using the wire brush and the grinder one handed with the bevel wire brush attachment. Will give the parts one more going over before painting them. The plan was to paint the parts today but my black topcoat part B had gone hard so I've had to order some more paint.
Today Nick came over and helped out, the first job was to build the high spec paint booth, attached some pics. We'll probably look at patenting the design. ;-) Nick then needle gunned off the undersell on the crossmember and we started started stripping the paint prepping it for some new fresh paint. This week we'll be painting the parts, strip the crossmember, remove the carbs, remove the exhaust manifold and I'll make up reinforcement plates for the top of the shock mount. The OS top shock mounting hole is oversize so needs to be fixed anyhow but the NS is like new so a good guide. I didn't have any plate large enough so will give the local sheet metal shop a call and see if I can scrounge some. I'll even get to play on my lathe with a four jaw chuck to drill out the hole. Hi Mitch,
It is not such a big deal to pull the cross-member when you have gone that far; all I did was hang the engine from chains via head bolts, supported by a 4x4 on the fender sills.

Oh - and I seam-sealed all the joints/overlaps on the cross-member too; easier to paint, and a better finished product.

Hi James,
I'll be pulling the engine and gearbox this winter after I've done the NS inner wing area, the engine bay will then be re-sprayed and I will then get the crossmember looking better. It's a long winded way of doing things but I want to drive her this summer for a bit. At this stage the focus is to get the car back on the road but I felt I had to do the suspension and steering first and thought I'd give the crossmember a once over as well. I like the idea of seam sealing the seams and will also do that to other areas of the car like I did in the rear underneath of the car. |

Looks a bit like a suspension graveyard out the back of the workshop but that's all the bits painted. Stripped off the carbs and manifolds last night from the car and getting some flat bar for the crossmember shock support tomorrow so that's the next job to do.

Touched up the parts today with a small brush in the few little areas I couldn't get properly with the spray gun and then it was replacing the oversize hole in the NS upper shock mount and then made the top plates and hopefully will weld them in tomorrow if I get time.
