Default High mileage D5 Oil consumption

Hi All,

I thought I was doing pretty well with my 2012 XC90 D5, now at 265K miles. It started to consume more oil than normal a couple of years ago, but it wasn't bad enough to do anything about, until about 6 months ago, when the dealer suggested that the turbo was the likely source of the leak. I had it changed recently, and they confirmed that the turbo was indeed leaking oil. Since then there has been no improvement, and it's consuming about a litre per 250 miles.

It's back at the dealer, and their response is now 'its a 260k engine - and your only option would be to replace it'. I have asked them to investigate again, but am not hopeful that they will find a fixable issue.

I really still like the car, and it is running powerfully and smoothly, but it may be time to let it go.

Can anyone suggest what the engine issue might be or report that they are still running OK at Lunar mileages?

I would definitely change the PCV valve ( not expensive ) .
On the 185bhp D5 it is situated directly behind the oil filter housing but I'm not sure about the later 200bhp engine .
It can be changed with this in situ but access is tight.
It is pretty easy to remove this housing and refit when the pcv has been changed but use a new gasket.

This PCV has definitely been known to cause excessive oil consumption.
Pretty certain I got mine from SKANDIX and it was about £25.

If it was burning (opposed to losing) a litre every 250 miles I think you would be getting other symptoms - oily smell, smoke, and maybe DPF issues....

Could be a combination of things, such as valve stem seals etc.

@S60D5-185. Thanks - I hope that the PCV will be part of the dealer’s diagnostic checks.
@Tannaton. No sign of DPF trouble or any smoke, but there is a faint smell of burning oil in the cabin.

There was a guy on here called O Sullivant who had identical issues.
He stripped the engine and replaced various parts and checked for wear, all to no avail.
He changed the PCV and it was sorted.
Start with the simple cheap stuff first.
Diagnostic check will probably reveal nothing.

I'd agree with t'other chap - I'd be ruling out Postiive Crankcase Pressure (PCV system) next before drawing any conclusions...

Thanks again both, I have no idea how far the dealer will really investigate, but I'll find out in a few days. There is a different outfit I can turn to and ask to replace the PCV if needed.

I would have the other garage change the PCV first.

I am not against using a main dealer per se BUT in this instance I think you will pay good money for no result from a main dealer.

The PCV is cheap and not hard to do.
Even if it is not the issue, you have changed something that probably needed changing.

I fear you may be right, but that's where it is right now. They suggest that they would do a boroscope examination on the cylinders - I'm trying to hold them to account over their call that it was a leaking turbo that was the cause, but they're starting to look a bit slippery. We shall see.

I stayed with them for over 10 years on the basis that a dealer maintained vehicle would last well.
