Possible Engine Swap
Hello. I have a 2005 V50 1.8 petrol. There is no compression in two of the cylinders and my mechanic has advised me that the best option is to find a replacement engine. Salvaged Volvo 1.8 units are quite rare and quite expensive, and I was wondering if a 1.8 unit out of a Ford Mondeo or Focus would do (as long as it's not the Vetec). I expect the Volvo sump, rocker cover, DMF and clutch etc. to be swapped over anyway, but will the Ford unit fit on the Volvo mounts and will pipes and cables plug in without too much surgery?
Finally, if anyone has a low-ish mileage 1.8 lump for sale (or Ford equivalent, if it will work) then I have cash and can travel. I will consider a whole car. Anyone other than Volvo aficionados would consider it bonkers, but I do like my old car and would prefer to keep it running if at all possible. Thanks, Clunk. |

The 1.8 in S40/V50's were also fitted into focus's as they are basically the same platform and it is actually a ford duratec engine

Same engine in the Mazda MX-5 (Mazda MZR engine) too I believe, must be loads of them about.
Having a read at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_...DE.2C_L8-VE.29 it looks like there are some small differences in the power output though.

Result
Thanks to members for their helpful suggestions. The cheapest engine I could find was a 84,000 mile unit for £495 plus £60 delivery. By a stroke of uncommon good luck I found a Mazda 6 for sale 14 miles away. I paid £175 for the car which needs welding for an MOT, but the 1.8 engine runs very sweetly and has only done 75,000 miles. Same block and head, so the swap should be straightforward.

Replacing a 1.8 duratec
Hi all
So, I've found a 1.8 duratec from a 2007 Mondeo with low miles. Would that be a straight swap for the oil burning engine in a 2006 V50 1.8? I'd swap the ancilliaries, but other than that they seem to be identical... Thanks for any ideas |
