Default S40 1.6d DRIVe - Low Fuel?

Hiya,

Bit of an odd one but i've had my car a week now, i've been avging @ 50mpg
I topped my car up full the other day, since then ive done about 260miles and the needle is inbetween half and empty....

I'm no rocket science but if my avg mpg is 50 and i've only done 270 miles, Id expect to atleast get another 250 out of that, surely? The on board computer says I have about that much left but I don't trust it with how low it is on the gauge.

Any ideas???

The computer sees how much is in the tank and monitors average MPG over the last 10 or so miles and does a distance to empty calc based on that. My low fuel light comes on when there is about 80 miles range remaining on the trip. My car gets about 560 miles to a full tank when driven pretty carefully in decent weather conditions.

Did you zero the average fuel consumption gauge when you first filled up ? Otherwise you are running on a bonus the previous careful owner left you with.
The gauge is ALWAYS the indicator of what is left in the tank ...

560 miles, is it the same model as mine? That sounds quite good, that's what I am after.

I zero the avg MPG every now and then but not the actual miles i've done (at the bottom of the dash).

I'm on the last bar now before red and the computer says it's about 150 miles left but I feel its probs got about 70 in it...

Just note, I do about 50 - 60 miles a day

Thanks

There is always more left in the tank than you think , you need to worry when the needle drops off the bottom mark of the gauge ( if you had a needle that is )

The 1.6D has a 52 litre tank. When you fill it to the brim you'll have an idea of how much was left.

Other than yours being a saloon and mine being and estate they are the same car yes, a D2 based, 8 valve 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop. I have had it as high as 630 miles to a tank but I got bored after that. The best recorded MPG I’ve ever had out of it was 75.7 MPG over half a tank on a journey to Kent, which was mid summer, 56 MPH or so, some Hypermiling and no A/C use.

Not sure if the OP has a 1.6D (16v) or D2 (8v). Given the original title being 1.6D DRIVe I assume he has the older 16v unit.

The best I ever got out of our 2009 V50 1.6 DRIVe (16v) was 59.9mpg between Edinburgh and Warwick with only me in the car and no roof bars or luggage. Most of the time ours averages 45-49mpg with a mix of road types and speeds.

I’m sure from previous posts it’s a 62 plate S40 8 valve unless I’m mistaken
