I was reading the thread dated Sept. 2010 regarding starting problems cymroboi was having, I am having similar troubles with my car, after reading the corresponding threads and solutions suggested by Clan I thought I would change the throttle body on my car to take this out of the equation only I cannot find anything about it in my haynes manual or on the internet about it, it is not the y shape it only has a single intake pipe on, has anyone changed this type of throttle body? this is my 2nd s40 2.0 diesel, I never had an ounce of trouble with my 1st one which had done over 100,000 miles until a deer wrote it off, my current one has 62,000 miles on it and have just shelled out £840 to have a new srs airbag ecu fitted, I love my s40 and want to keep it, help

Ok, what makes you think it’s the throttle body? What’s the symptom? It could be the butterfly flap sticking. To take it off, take the pipe off the intake, unplug the sensors and pop em out (don’t damage em). Undo the three torx bolts that hold it to the manifold and you can just take it off.
Get yourself a set of Torx keys..... I had an intermittent starting issue with my former V50. When the engine was at running temp, if I stopped the engine and restarted it it wouldn’t rev. I’d shut down the engine again and left it for 10mins it’d be ok again until it was back to running temp. Ordered another throttle housing and after a year it was doing it again. This time I stripped the throttle housing off the motor, cleaned it with carb cleaner and chamfered the edges of the butterfly housing with some sand paper until I could see a slight halo of light if I shined a torch up it and then I blanked off the EGR that was filling the housing full of oily crude. While job time 1hr 15 mins and the problem stopped. The throttle housings are made of plastic that distorts and jams the butterfly flap and along with the coating of carbon deposits caused the butterfly flap to stick. Doing the above stops it from happening if that’s what’s causing the starting issue on your motor. Good luck. TT

Thanks for the reply TT the starting problem arose several months ago coincidently after the car was serviced with a fuel filter change, give due to my garage they took it back and changed the fuel filter 3 times to try and resolve the problem to no avail, they told me to take it away and use it as normal and if it did not start to contact them and they would come down with their diagnostic machine to check fuel pressures etc, it did not start next day and they came down hooked up machine which showed everything functioning normal with no fault codes, towed it to garage and after a week gave me it back saying they got it started by spraying easy start into inlet air intake and could not get it to not start again, took it away next morning would not start, had it transported to a diesel specialist who got it started by spraying easy start in same area and again after 3 days could not get it to not start, paid them for their diagnosis and ever since it has been tempremental in starting, now it starts sometimes 1st turn as it did when I 1st got the car and others it cranks over and over as though it has to build up fuel pressure before it will start, I read some threads from 2010 with the same starting woes which led me to thinking of changing the throttle body , mainly via replies from a member called clan who appearded to know what he was talking about, thanks again for your input,I will have a look at what you said in your reply and comment back here. johnsy
