wheel damage
Last night on a blind bend I had to swerve to avoid an ambulance (itself swerving to avoid a cyclist with no lights - what a menace), and scraped my left front wheel against a leaf covered kerb. The damage is, I feel, beyond mere cosmetic (see pic). Does anyone know what a new wheel should cost, including remounting tyre, rebalancing, and resetting (or reprogramming?) the TPMS? Does this work have to be done at a main dealer (car still in warranty), or can a specialist garage do it? Wheel is 17".

Depends on how you want to play this but my initial impression repairable the top left of that picture would be my main concern - it would definitely need a wheel refurber who knows they are doing though.... Also get the full wheel redone not just the face like some do.

I had to replace a 17" alloy on my old V50 several years ago and it cost around £300 for a new wheel. The Volvo dealer refitted the tyre free of charge. It did not have the TPMS so not sure what you would need to do about this.

in 2010 I bought a set of "take off" alloys from Johnstones Volvo in Solihull for my V50. They were as new 16" fitted with Michelin tyres still with the stickers on them. Delivered to SW Scotland cost me £360 all in.
If you can get a deal like that just change all 4. |

Gutted for you. I hope you can claim off the cyclists insurance?

Oh I wish! But cyclist was going the other way (and why the oncoming ambulance, with all 'blues and twos' on, was forced on to my side of the road to miss him). By the time I could have turned around somewhere and chased after the cyclist, they would likely have been long gone. And even if I had caught up with them, what could I have done? A bit dodgy to start challenging a stranger on a poorly lit road at night...
I went to my Volvo dealer. He said that the damage looked to be repairable, and sent me to a local place that they use. In light of comments above, was a bit reticent, but seeing some Mercs and BMWs (and a Chevy Volt) outside gave me a bit of confidence. They said that the wheel was a bit of a mess, but not terminal, and have quoted me £65+VAT to repair it, which is not the end of the world, and just need the car for the day. Booked in for Friday, will report on how well it turns out. |

I had a set of old Volvo alloys with winter tyres on, they were very badly corroded and had a similar amount of kerb damage as your wheel.
I took them to 'The Wheel Specialist' and they have come back like new - I also took the opportunity to get a different finish to match the current car. It cost £80 per wheel including taking off and refitting the tyre. I would suggest you speak to a local specialist as repairing will be so much cheaper than replacing and I really don't think you'll see any difference. (I have no connection with TWS or any other wheel refurbishment establishment!) |

Fantastic! Think about I'd have cried if I saw that! Just watch out for rogue ambulances
