Default 1.9 Diesel (2000) engine problems

Hi Guys,

I need some help.

I was driving ~ 70mph and suddenly I have noticed that the engine started to loose power and the red light in the top right end of the dashboard came on (engine did not overheat, there was no smoke behind me, no bizzare noises from the engine compartment).

I have stopped waited 2 min and restarted the engine. No probs. Started but stalled after 10 sec.

I've opened the bonet and noticed that the auxillary belt is partially shreeded (I am not fully sure why as I have replaced the tensioner and the belt 6 weeks ago).

Bloke from the RAC came and came up with all the ridiculus statments that the car is overfilled with oil (I change it myself and know how much it needs), that there is no fuel (despite the fact that there should be 20 in the tank and there was fuel visible in the pipes after removing the engine cover).

By the way he competely neglected the fact that the auxillary belt is close to snapping..!

He then disconnected (I am not fully sure what it is) a thick plastic tube, spayed something into it as I was turning the engine. The engine started and stopped few time however it did start finally for about 20 sec. Then the auxillary belt ripped even further (however not fully), pannic on the board and I stopped the engine.

I have tired to turn the engine (I have removed whatever left from the auxilalry belt) and it does turn easily, there is no bizzare noises, however it will not start.

I could not work out why the auxillary belt ripped.... I have therefore checked all the wheels that the belt runs through and one of them....(once more I am not sure how to call it) but the one that is the closest to the driver and is the closest to the ground, does not even move half an inch. Is it normal, should it turn easily or is it jammed? Well... what it is... could somebody advise me on that.
(I suspect its water pump but it also could be oil or aircon?)

My theory for now is that one of those will got stuck therefore the auxillary belt continued to slide along it and simply disintegrated.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Les

The 1.9D's fuel pump is a mechanical fuel pump, im unsure if its physically connected to the engine or its belt driven.

The only replacement part on my 1.9D has been an alternator pulley which I am guessing might have worn or jammed, which might have caused the shredding, or indeed the incorrect tightness has caused stress on the belts

The guy would have removed the intake pipe and probably sprayed some cleaner onto the sensor just in case it was that.
