Default Tailgate struts

Hi all, my apologies if this has been covered before. My car is 2009 V70 SE D Auto about 180k miles and for some time the tailgate struts are not holding up the lid when you are taking goods in or out. Replace the struts. I chose "Boot Gas Strut 437135 Stabilus Spring Lift Tailgate Rear 30674836 31217640" (about £18 each) and the fitting is fiddley but not difficult and it is covered by several video clips to help you. What a difference; the lid goes up by itself and stays there until you close it. Simple but saves bumps on my head.

I'm having a similar issue but I don't have any gas struts, as far as I can see, just the hinges are visible. Mine's a late 2008 XC70.

Can you give any more info, links,or something?

Hi Filbert,

The gas struts are hiding inside the headliner and run parallel to the roof. If you have a look at post #67 here on my thread you can see some pics from when I replaced mine which will explain.

Hope that helps.

How long did the job take Stu? I've bought the struts to do the job (hopefully the right ones but weren't as cheap as £30!) but have been putting it off. I have the powered boot too like yourself.

Many thanks

I did both sides after reading the excellent "how to do it" posts. What took more time for me, was being very careful to remove the rear headlining as I'm very aware of breaking the plastic clips. Actually changing the struts is easy.
So nice not to have the lid regularly coming down on my head! Go for it.

DON'T buy the struts you need to swing the spring clips round to secure them. Buy the "pop in" type.

Your sanity and hands will thank me later.

Knowing my luck I've probably bought the wrong ones then!

Hello, it took about an hour to change the struts for me but I tend to work slowly/methodically and take a lot of tea breaks. You could probably do it in half the time but be careful not to damage the headliner levering it out of the way

Cheers
Stu

Hello All,

Am about to order the struts to carry this out on my own V70. I was not aware that there were different types of attachment clips? Can anyone provide a make/part number for the "pop on" ones as described by Monkeh for a 58 plate V70 with the powered tailgate?

Many thanks...
