So not sure why on a car of £10k you wouldn’t be prepared to send a few detailed pics! I did explain their was a good distance between us and if I liked the pics I would go and look.

My thinking was I would probably pay 7k for a very genuine car with that sort of credentials. And didn’t expect it to go that mad. I though it would get to 5k and sit for a while until some last minute bidding.

So the fact he wouldn’t send any detailed pics suggested to me there was possibly a bit more bodywork than he was letting on, the end of the week pictures would see that done. So I though we’ll if he is not going to send pics, I would ask about the presence of spot welds around the rear arches, trying to find out if it seemed original and he wouldn’t confirm that either, just kept saying well it will be sold by the end of tomorrow! So something strange about the whole thing, and the way the bidding has just continued is strange, you normally get a few early bids to a low level a dip with the odd bid in the middle unit a last couple of hours spike. So if this is to have a last couple of hours spike, it’s going to be 20k !

Definitely think we need the ghostbusters as their is something strange in the neighbourhood!
Hi Dan,
Thank you for that - curiouser and curiouser!
Are you saying the motor car sold on Saturday morn - or that the advertisement started then?
This one is odd - my view is that the seller is probably bluffing, jacking up the price himself and hoping someone will get carried away at the end and place a silly bid, but then who am I to say?
I really can't think this car is worth £10,000.
Alan

PS. I wonder Dan, did the chap say anything about the 'deposit taken' notice he placed last Sunday morn? I'm guessing that part is just plain old deceit?

Just thought. What are the odds of someone being £10k interested in an old Volvo not being on relevant forum?

Well, I think there is quite a good chance that anyone with 10 grand burning a hole in their pocket to buy an old Volvo is reading this piece, and to some extent that is the reason we contribute to it. I certainly joined this forum a few months before buying the Royal Barge (my second 240 - I bought one new in about 1986) to do some research about the motor cars, as did you.

I still doubt that the auction is being led by a genuine buyer, but perhaps the seller is reading this (and if so that would be fine of course).

:-)

Hi Alan, no I spoke to him Saturday morning just a few hours after he listed it for sale. It was only at around 3k then. No deposit taken notice then. But he was absolutely adamant it would be sold by the end of Sunday!

Many thanks Dan,
I'll watch this one until it ends on Tuesday - but I suspect we will see it advertised again next week - perhaps the highest bidder won't show up :-)

From what you have said Dan, this one might be the sort of thing you are looking for:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275014103517?hash=item40081e31dd:gW0AAOSw4Mdhg9e 5

... 7 grand (but maybe the seller would take a near offer) which I'd say was at the top of the price range for any 240. It looks like a very nice motor car with good provenance.

Alan

PS. Sometimes I think about buying a late, very good condition 240 estate like this myself, but then I think about it and common sense rules it out. Nice as it might look, it would have no advantages whatsoever over my 2014 Skoda Superb elegance diesel estate: it would cost considerably more to run, has far more old fashioned engineering, is less practical... USW. The RB (1980 244, so tax and MoT exempt and cost a great deal less) fulfils my Volvo 240 fetish much better :-).

I only purchased my estate to use. Since the V70 went and the Clubman appeared it threw up the need for another big motor.
The mini is fine, £30 ved, 50 mpg but no roof rack, (of any worth), available, so the new baby fits the bill .
Well that's what I told SWMBO!😇

Motor cars are always compromises Andrew, and it sounds like your two fill what you need very well between them. I'd quite like a later 240 estate like the one I bought new in 1986, but the Skoda just does everything better (£30 VED, 50 MPG, fairly cheap insurance, carry 5 people whilst pulling a trailer with 2 motorbikes and a roof rack full of stuff, cheap to maintain... USW). Dan and I use the Porsche for fun trips out and the RB is my daily driver for around town. Three motor cars is probably an expensive way of meeting our needs when just the Skoda would do fine.

It would be nice to hear and see a bit more of your new motor car Andrew.

The new acquisition is a very standard GL apart from the Tors alloys. PO,a guy who likes his motors and tidied this one up well.
Sold on here in July, by an ex- Volvo mechanic who had it 20 years. Only 4 previous keepers.
Apart from some, now cured corrosion at the rears , normal suspects, it is very solid.
PO had a 4 post ramp and wanted me to inspect it and be satisfied nothing was lurking.
I fannied around, because of the auto but soon came to the conclusion it was plenty good enough for what I wanted.

PO on here so will just say, nice chap!

Tried to upload JPEG pics @ 2.6mb, won't have it!

Get yourself a free account with https://postimages.org/ and click the blue button at the end of the "Hotlink for forums" link then right click in your post where you want the image then click paste followed by Enter/Return.

I normally put another Enter/Return after to give a blank line like a margin under the image to make life easier for reading. The good things about using a third-party image hosting site is you have a one-stop-shop for images where you can post the same pics on other sites without having to upload them to that other site, it cuts down on the storage needed by any given forum and you get to see full size pics in the posts without having to click on the images.

A bit like that..............
