Try Shipham Motor Company. They've changed the autobox fluid in all my V70s.

It is another internet myth

any volvo autobox would benefit from an oil change if it's done over 90.000 miles or so . Most are serviced on the cheap by then so don't get done .
Sorry, but I don’t agree.

I’ve read the part of the owners manual that relates to the transmission for my car & it only mentions that the fluid needs to be changed if the vehicle is used for towing or in arduous conditions.

So, to the person who knows no different, they think they don’t need to change the fluid because they don’t do any towing for example. Volvo have never offered me a gearbox service either. It isn’t part of their maintenance schedule.

Changing the fluid is a no brainer in my opinion. Fluids need to be changed at some point in time to prolong longevity.

Thanks Kev. Who would you recommend in Manchester to do it? I'm in Stockport. My local independent is good but not a Volvo specialist, and doesn't have Vida Dice, and doesn't think it's necessary.

Hallmark Volvo in Stockport (Volvo Specialist). They have VIDA & know their stuff. They do a drain & fill though, not a full flush. They don’t recommend a full transmission flush, especially on an older car. Your looking at around £180 for it to be done (drain & fill).

There’s another independent Volvo garage called Trevor Burgess in Hyde, but they’re more pricey. I don’t know if they do a full flush.

They are sealed for life unless used as a taxi or for towing.

That’s the exact Volvo literature.

And if you phone the dealers they will largely say sealed for life.

Not that we can rely on Wikipedia but it does say that too -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWTF-80_SC

"It is a sealed for life unit, using proprietary transmission fluid which is labelled as being maintenance free. However, for vehicles used primarily for towing, taxi or in mountainous environments transmission fluid change every 60,000 km is recommended"

seems to be semantics. All these uses are putting strain on the box and long term high mileage running may well do the same. I suppose these terms sound better than "don't change the ATF if you only tootle around the shops and down to grandma's place" There has to be a limitation to the scope of "sealed for life" claims even if you're not a taxi driver!

Default slipping torque converter

https://www.swedespeed.com/thread

Thanks for this post.

I'll try the flush.

Under load it may seem slipping torque converter is slipping 1700-1800 mostly in 3rd gear or higher at about 50MPH.

My guess is its been happing for a while before i bought car. V8 4.4 XC90

Anyone have any luck finding a " cheaper " repair rather than remaining the whole unit completely?

Interest in stories.. Thks
