Drive shafts.
Those who visit the lounge area will find my experience in a thread titled What the hell !!!.
For the benfit of those whom do not I will relate my experiences here in the hope they may benefit from it. My car is a 2wd xc70 of 2010 vintaget with just over 82,000 miles on the clock. Cv joint has been clicking on full lock for a while and as I tow I wanted to get it replaced before it failed. Volvo do not do joint separately so it has to be a full shaft from them. Their price, wait for it, £820 including vat. Obviously at that price I went looking at alternatives. Cv joint has a complication as there seems to be 2 types with differing number of splines, so to ensure the correct one the shaft would have to be stripped before ordering the joint to find the one needed. Cost around £80+vat Alternative was a remanufacture shaft. Given that the outer joint was worn on mine I took the view that a new shaft made better sence than just the joint, esspecially as I tow with it. Phoned my local Independent motor factors. They supplied me a Shaftec remanufactured unit, retail price £180+vat. They let me have it for trade price £151+vat +£7 carriage for overnight delivery and a £15 returnable surcharge on return of the old shaft. In total I paid £207.60 and will get £15 of that back when I return the old shaft. Shaft comes with a 24 month 24,000 mile garentee. I got trade deal as I have used the factors exclusively for 17 years, not all will be in my position which is why I quote the retail price for reference. The £ 600+ I saved on the volvo price will more than pay for the 2 front tyres that will soon need changing. The Shaftec unit seems of good quality and length of garentee is reassuring. Most importantly there is no no clicking and clacking when turning on full lock.. Hope this may help others in needing new shaft and facing volvos ripoff price situation. Paul. |

I assume they would be the same as the xc70 especially the 2WD. You can start a chat and have them run your vin so they will get you the right parts no matter how many variations there might be. Never go to Volvo they just pull your pants down as you found out but £200 odd for a driveshaft is a fair bit seeing as you can just do the CV joint and save the rest for a nice meal or whatever... but also probably easier for you to just swap the whole shaft instead of bashing off the old joint and having the grease all over the place! |

I am in enough trouble over the gearbox oil I spilt.
While under there I changed the gearbox oil, something I do every 2 years. As I said I tow with it, so the full shaft made more sence to me as I did not want to have to pull it a second time to do the inner joint. The disapointing thing is that the car only has 82,000 miles on it and a volvo /ford joint needed replacing. No faults found on the gaiter to account for it. Thanks for the info on the joints though, I was going on what my factor told me from his catalogues. Have changed cv joints in the past and find the easiest way is to put grease into the shaft hole of the joint so that fitting it to the shaft squeezes it through the balls and if nessesary an extra dollop before the gaiter goes on.
