Default Rear axle P1800ES

Newby with this Volvo. But it’s a manual and at 3600rpm it runs only 120 km/h (just below 80 mph). Being used to 2800rpm at this cruising speed of 120 kmh in the 245 GLE I wonderen If the crown and pinion wheel from 240 wouldn’t fit in my ES axle.

Anyone ever considered this?
What would be the ratio in this ‘72 model? Manual OD tranny!!!
Since the BHP for both 245GLE and the ES are more or less the same I Geuss 2800rpm would add much comfort.

Somewhere I read 4.1:1 or 4,58:1 or there abouts would be common. So in case of 4,1 I need to search a ratio similar to the 240 - 3,54:1

Any suggestions welcom

Volvo used the following rear end ratios on 1800's
4.10 61-64 Without OD
4.56 61-68 (69?) OD
4.30 (69) 70-73 OD
4.10 71 AUTOMATIC
3.9 72-73 AUTOMATIC

The above list from this interesting site
http://www.v1800reg.org/pages/Did%20...w%2080to81.pdf

You could swap in either of the automatic axles and being in flat Holland even the 3.9 might be OK.

But can’t I take some 240 diff internals to reduce the ratio?

Isn't the P1800ES diff a 1030 model which all Dana 30 fits?

Thanks Derek, Based on the response from Dai it should be possible. All other responses are maybe and maybe so not much value to be given to these.

I also found attached http://www.differentials.com/technic...arrier-breaks/

I guess this shines some extra light on the matter and makes a rebuilt quite realistic with smaller ratio (lower revs)
