Presumably the front wheels were lifted off the road when being recovered? Automatic gearboxes are quite fussy when it comes to being towed.

Have you tried changing the ATF. It may be a forlorn hope but compared with the costs you are expecting, it wouldn't be too much money to gamble to see if a series of oil changes would improve the operation of the box. Three gearbox "sump dumps" with a couple of hundred miles between each would change most of the fluid and then you could re-judge the situation.

Just give the parts dept your VIN and they will confirm.
Following this with interest as I'll be doing a g/box oil change just as a preventative / routine measure sometime soon. This based on my reading and research which suggests that although Volvo may well say changes aren't needed, other manufacturers using the same box suggest otherwise. In fairness, Perth Volvo have suggested an oil change when I complained about downshift from 5 to 4 being occasionally a little harsh.

Now - my V70 is a 2011 car, but both the handbook and MyVolvo are noting JWS3309. I'll make a call to the dealers on Monday to see what they have to say about it. Whether I get them to do it (£200 Sir - - ) or tackle it myself is still under discussion :-)

I noticed that Photobucket have stopped letting the pic of the gearbox drain plug show, so I reloaded here:

I'm looking for advice .i have a 2010 xc70 D5,had it for about 18 months regularly change the engine oil, don't know if the the transmission fluid has been changed. It has now about 98k on it.Should I change the fluid in the auto box or leave it? I've read that you should, shouldn't do it and I'm a bit unaware of what to do......any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

95% of people on here who change it would recommend doing so and reporting improvements in "manners". Those that don't usually had pre-existing problems and were hoping the new fluid would fix them.

So yes I would change it - especially if you tow.

Just finished a long overdue task. Changed the automatic transmission fluid on my MY09 XC70 D5. I got the car at 125k and mileage is now 135k. It has a full MDSH but I have no knowledge of it having the ATF changed. Car had a towbar fitted so not sure of towing history.

First time I've done this, so I used volvosweden's YouTube video as a guide and VIDA: -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAb9p8Wph-M

Did a simple sump dump of 3 litres, add fresh 4 litres, cycle gearbox, dump 4 litres, add fresh 4 litres, cycle gearbox, set level at correct temp. and reset counter with Vida. This process replaces 75% of the ATF with fresh.

New drain plug washer and fill level o-ring used also (about £3 each from main dealer).

The extracted fluid was very black but still has a slight red tinge. Seems a bit smoother on changes now, but hard to tell.

My main dealer wanted £55 for 4 litres of ATF, but you can get 8 litres of genuine Volvo ATF for about £80 on ebay.

However the Mannol JWS3309 ATF Multivehicle fluid is only £57 delivered from ebay for 20 litres! Enough for a few changes.
