I've had that twice - simple restarting did the trick.

You won't get the "cruise" if some system components arn't handshaking properly. The main culprit is the brake or clutch switch.

I had the same problem - clutch position sensor, spotted on the dealers diagnostics computer replaced under warranty.

Hi

Thank you for your reply.

Just to let you know firstly the car is automatic and unless the cruise message is on it will not engage cruise control unless I actually turn the ignition on and off.

As you can imagine and I'm a little lost as to what is going on as I cannot get the message up, I wonder how the brake pedal switch or the handbrake switch would stop the cruise message coming up on the display.

Thanks again.

Derek.

the cruise control function won't engage if there's something wrong with one or more of the components of the cruise control system.
The most common component to fail is the switch/sensor on the brake/clutch or accelerator as these are being triggered all the time whether the cruise control is active or not.

If you have cruise control set, touching the clutch (not in your case) or brake disables it.
Depending on the type of car/.setup, touching the accelerator can do different things. Sometimes it deactivates the set speed other time it will return to the set speed after you've taken your foot off the accelerator ( some have a preset time so if you leave your foot on the accelerator for say 60 seconds it diasables the set speed)

turning the iggy off/on makes it perform another test of the system, if it's something working and sometimes not then it's obviously an intermittant fault.
