"steering failure" "immobiliser" and "anti-skid"
I got a problem with my 2006 Volvo S40.The display reads 3 messages such as "steering failure" "immobiliser" and "anti-skid". Steering is locked and car doesn't start.
I replaced SCU (starting control unit) with new one, but nothing is changed.3 messages are still appeared. Everything is same as before. I have following questions. 1)how do I know if it is updated SCU? 2)do I need some kind of special equipment (re-programming etc) to replace SCU? 3)should I also replace SCL (Steering column lock)? 4)if i am not wrong, after replacing SCL it should be re-programmed.If it is true, how do I do that? Thanks. |

Hi Chinzo,
I had the same problem with mine in January it left me stranded at a shopping centre. I think you problem is that you have to register the new part on the ECU of the car. Well according to Volvo you do. until that is done, i don't think you will get it to work. Glad i just let Volvo sort it and only paid for the labour! Taz |

I have the same problem with my volvo s40. I took it to an independent volvo repair shop but they were unable to start the car. They suggested that I take it to the dealership. How was your problem resolved>

hi,i have replaced a few SCL for posting codes as mentioned,it involves removing the steering column and you have to drill out part of the lock to turn the motor manually to release from column, the new one fits in with sheer bolts,it is a fiddly job,but you will req software to program the new SCL,i recomend bite the bullet and transport the car to dealer to repair.

as clan mentions you could be suprised,if only just out of warranty i would push for good will, this part should never fail but there is a known technical report on this from Volvo, there might even be a extended warranty period for such a fault, either way it does need dealer attention.

grass hopper, you posted this is the forum a while back ago..."as clan mentions you could be suprised,if only just out of warranty i would push for good will, this part should never fail but there is a known technical report on this from Volvo, there might even be a extended warranty period for such a fault, either way it does need dealer attention."
this was in regards to the steering column lock and immobilizer messages in the Volvo s40. my question is where did you find the information about this being a "known" issue? the same thing happened to me yesterday, my s40 is 2005 with only 51,000 miles. i just received a quote from the dealer of close to $700 to fix the steering column lock and $480 for the start control unit. It was driving just fine yesterday and then all of a sudden it just stopped working. paid $200 to get it towed to dealership today. i'd like to know more about this problem so any more information you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
