I would much rather buy an ext. warranty from the main dealer IF it is clearly specified which items are covered in detailed and very concise words. With this in mind, I would definitely recommend an extended warranty on a car such as the new XC90. By the past, Volvo has shown at repeated times they could not care less about major design flaws that surface just after their very short warranty expires, causing owners to pay literally thousands out of their pocket for items that should have never been an issue. Volvo is the worst company when it comes to take responsibility and they do make costly mistakes in their designs.
Think you are being a bit unfair as I and many others have had repairs carried out at with Volvo paying part after warranty ran out.

So £254 cheaper than the third party dealer warranty that I had been offered.

Interestingly, the official Volvo warranty is administered by Car Care Plan - as is the dealer warranty - so it could be the same product with a dealer markup perhaps. Not sure.

I'll be taking the 'official' one for £845 though thats for sure. Slightly disappointed that I wasn't presented with both options by my dealer but i'll let them off as they are lending me a V90 Inscription tomorrow to play with purely out of interest in the car.
I got some prices from my dealer today for their `Volvo extended warranty' which is administered by 'Car Care Plan ltd'

Standard cars 1 yr £399, 2yrs £599, 3yrs £799
Prestige cars AWD S60R V70R & T5. 1yr. £449, 2yr £649, 3yr £ 899

Just google 'car care plan' .... they seem to be the bottom of the pile re extended warranties..
some say to avoid at all costs... usually your own!

EDIT: The new provider is Allianz Assistance.
I extended the warranty on my XC60 when the original 3 years was up (September 2018). (Glad I did, because a month later it needed a new alternator and now it needs an airbag sensor and part of the wiring harness!).

Marshall Volvo in Milton Keynes could offer me two plans:
  1. An official Volvo Extended Warranty (Volvo Warranty Administration, operated by Car Care Plan Limited)
  2. A third party policy with a lower level of cover.
Crucially, to have the official Volvo cover, I needed to take the policy out before the end of the original 3 years. Once that was up, the only choice would have been the non-Volvo cover.

One point to note about the official Volvo Extended Warranty - it can be transferred to a new private owner but not to a garage so it's worthless when you trade the car in (which I am now doing...)

Default I'd take the Volvo extended warranty...

I'm glad I took out the 'Volvo' extended warranty, even if it is Car Care Plan who administer it and not really Volvo.

I did look around at other 3rd party warranties, but given that the prices were roughly comparable with the Volvo offering for the same/similar level of cover, I ended up taking the Volvo extended warranty.

A few months later (Car 3 1/2 years old, 61,000 miles, FVSH, XC60 D4) it started losing a small amount of radiator coolant. Not a huge amount, and sporadic, so difficult to identify where it was leaking from. I took it to the dealer who had it for 8 days, carrying out various diagnostics and eventually they determined that the cylinder head gasket had failed. They dealt directly with Car Care Plan, with no intervention from me and got the car sorted under warranty (Thankfully as it would have been around £2500 otherwise).
I'm sure having a good relationship with the dealer helped - TMS Volvo Hinckley - I've used them for years and highly recommend them.

The advantage of the Volvo extended warranty is that the dealers will liaise directly with the warranty administrator, so no additional hassle for the car owner. Needless to say, I'll be taking out the Volvo extended warranty on my current vehicle as soon as it gets to three years old.

Interesting read as this is something I am considering as my 17 reg is coming to the end of the warranty period.

I would also like to extend the VOC service to ensure Spotify and vehicle tracking via app still works. Does anyone have any experience in this?

Does it matter who you take the extended warranty from? My local dealer is Northampton however as I work in Milton Keynes I am also considering that dealership.

My dealer told me that I would have to get the extended warranty from:

https://volvoextendedwarranty.motor-...icle-details-1

I was also told that I would be notified approximately two months before my car is 3 years old and given the option to take out the extended warranty.

Clicked on the link on the previous post and extending my XC90 Volvo Warranty to 4 yrs in total is a possibility on the web site at a cost of £445 for 60,000 miles (whichever comes sooner - the years or the mileage) or £495 for 4 yrs or 80,000 miles (whichever comes sooner - the years or the mileage).

It didn't seem possible to extend to 5yrs total on the web site so we rang Volvo to ask about doing this.

Yes. It is possible to extend to 5yrs but you have to do this through a dealership. Such a Warranty is a bono fido Volvo Warranty and there are a few exclusions, such as hoses, brake components, exhaust pipes and similarly obvious stuff but Electrics and Mechanicals are included. The cost is £895 for 5yrs or 100,000 miles (whichever comes sooner).

As others have reminded us: An Extended Warranty is of absolutely no benefit to any dealership and is therefore a valueless feature if you offer the vehicle up in part exchange.

Taking out a vehicle Warranty Extension is only going to be of any use to you if you are going to be Selling The Vehicle Yourself.

When I request a quote from Warranty Direct, selecting all their cover options the price for 12 months cover is £293.12. Quite a bit less than the £445 Volvo are asking for. Anybody any experiences of using them?

**Ignore this - I just did a search**

I got a 3 year add-on quotation (to my existing Volvo 3yr Warranty) from Warranty Direct for my XC90 D5 Inscription for everything which worked out at £745.47

That includes:

Core Plus
Safety System (everything excepting the usual wearing brake parts)
Emissions System Protection (incl. catalytic convertor and failure of DPF to regenerate following a specialist cleaning procedure)
Multi-Media System Protection (incl. all integral components such as satellite navigation ECU/DVD drive and main drive screen; audio head units/main dashboard units)
Uncapped Labour Rates
0% Customer Contribution to Parts
