Engine Check Light
Hi,
Enjoying my new (second hand) 17 plate XC90 and this evening, Engine Check light came on. I buzzed VOC and they said providing its Amber, I am okay to continue driving, no advise on taking it to dealer for checking/servicing etc. Whilst I know no one would truly know why its popped up, I was hoping someone can shed some light on what can possibly trigger. Not entirely certain of this but I think whilst I was stationary, and in Forward gear, I tried turning off the engine - have I shot me self in the foot? Trip to Volvo dealership awaits Cheerio! |

Sorry to hear this, but could you please give us some more information on your model especially the engine type due to the obvious Diesel v Petrol causes for this warning light to activate.......

Sometimes it clears by itself as deposits are burt off the sensor. If it is the cause of the light coming on.

Thanks. The sign didn’t disappear this morning and has stayed on for my journey to work. Just spoke to Volvo dealer who couldn’t see the car until Friday and pointed me to a Volvo Assistance, a service I didn’t even know I had! They’ve agreed to send someone in 90 mins. Fingers crossed!

My experience suggests that the source of this warning light will most likely be the exhaust sensor, as nu11eaf says. The dealer will clean it and reset the warning light system. If it then happens again, try dealing with it yourself by running the car in dynamic mode to increase average engine revs and consider using premium diesel from a named brand. This quickly worked for me even whilst pottering round the Lake District. I appreciate that not everyone on this forum agrees premium fuel is necessary but it reduced the build up of sooty deposits on my exhaust trims and must surely therefore have had a similar effect upstream too.

Just have the stored diagnostic trouble code read and then you'll know. Best to buy your own cheap OBD2 reader to avoid the inconvenience of having to call for the attention of a Volvo dealer on the off chance that your intake manifold is about to melt or burst into flames, although my 'recall' letter did make it clear that you are meant to contact them just in case! But I'm not sure that XC90s have this concern?
I've had an amber warning light on several occasions during my year of ownership and it wasn't always the P014c associated with the exhaust oxygen sensor getting sooted up... in fact by now you should have been given a software update during a dealer service that makes the system tolerant of the resulting slow response. Mine magically fixed itself a few weeks before the last service in February but I still mentioned it and it was explained to me that the soot build up usually clears during a DPF active regeneration plus the batch of software updates loaded during the service takes care of it anyway.

another cause is the fine tube going up to the exhaust manifold pressure sensor blocking . A new tube is £100 .
