I had a 3 litre sump dump carried out by my Volvo specialist back in January and I did a 1 litre Gibbons flush soon after. It did improve things but the change was still lumpy at times between 1st and 2nd when hot. However, it was very intermittent depending on how you used the throttle.

My grandson flushed 9 litres through today (took about an hour) and the oil was very brownish and cloudy. Even after 9 litres had been flushed, the oil coming out was still brownish and cloudy, which was disappointing, but there was at least a reddish tinge to it and it seems more fluid like come the end.

After a very quick test run with hot oil, 1st to 2nd can still be randomly lumpy but nowhere near as severe as originally. The other gear changes are silky smooth as always and almost imperceptible. Maybe another 10 litre flush until we get red clear oil coming out might be worth doing?

The question is, I have read how on later models you have to reset something to tell the car it has new transmission oil. However, I have not heard of this on the older models. Some posters have mentioned that some gearboxes do a self learning process after gearbox oil changes. However, I would be surprised if it applied for my car.

Anyone know?
My 2006 XC70 with 220k needed 16l to flush the oil clean.
You can use the Volvo interface kit called Vida and the lead to reset the oil counter and clear the memory. It's not imperative and if everything settles down after a few more journeys then don't worry about it!

Thanks luggsey. That’s promising to hear. I will let this fresh 9 litres swish through the gearbox for a few miles and then get my grandson do another Gibbons flush. He’s a dab hand at it now. I will keep the Forum updated on progress.

Regards and thanks again.

Thanks barrybritcher.

I have a spare green clip and 2 yellow O rings ready, just in case. However, this is the 2nd Gibbons flush I have done and not yet had to replace anything. Nothing has broken and there are no leaks. I always wet the seals in oil before pushing the top pipe back in. Perhaps I have been lucky so far?

However, once I am satisfied there is clear pinkish oil flowing out after the next flush, I will most probably replace them all. Saying that, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?
