Here are some pictures of the little clips you take off to remove the struts. To be fair I couldn't see them until I wore my spectacles! A bradawl did the job for me.

This is how it is mounted on my Dog guard. There are no such clips unfortunately.

Thanks a lot

Oh! Well, that's completely different!
You say your car is a 2008. Are you sure it is a phase 2 model?
I thought that by 2008 they were making the phase 3, and perhaps they have different dog guards.

Just delivered and fitted. They work perfectly and super cheap. FYI they are the 80N ones.

As I posted before, with my dog guard model, you need to unscrew the struts, which pretty simple. You then screw in the upper end first and after that you can push a little to shorten the strut and fit into the other end.

Hope this will help others.
And thanks to all that have kindly helped.

Luca

Well, I'm not an expert on the XC70 at all, but that doesn't look like the phase 2 cars I've seen before, so I'd guess it is a phase 3.

Re the P2 dog/cargo gate fitted the 80NM ones recommend by many a couple of years ago and they are still working perfectly.

However, having read through the string of posts again, I thought I'd have a look and see if there were alternatives in higher force values and found the same make, GTV

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252711090226 (£4.84 for 2 delivered!)

which are available in 50Nm to 150Nm - I've order 2 of the 100Nm variants each of which are rated to hold up/support a 3.5kg door - I haven't weighed the dog gate but don't think it is anywhere near 7kg. When they arrive I'll fit them and report back.

Just had a look at these and the length seems to be too long. Did you have any joy with them? They quote 250mm centres.

They have yet to be delivered..........did note the open length was stated as 270mm with the centres at 250mm so "guesstimated" them as being around 150mm in the closed position and so not fully open with the gate down - whether they will work correctly remains to be seen

Further searches found these 150mm 10Nm struts which only have a 35mm throw which may prove useful

UPDATE the gas struts arrived a few minutes ago and as estimated the centres CLOSED are 150mm.................which means they are far too long for the dog gate

However, on the brightside they are just the right length for lid of the top box of a tool chest - not all is lost.
